Mobile Development

What I liked

I enjoyed working on graphics, VR, and AWS. It was fun and I learned a lot on the job.

What I wish was different

I wish I had God level coding skills and a bigger office. I also wish that I was more proficient in amazon web cloud services. Because of my lack of knowledge in the area I was unable to get real-time multiplayer AR and VR to work. Getting stuck on software development issues can take enormous amounts of time. It can take days and sometimes weeks.

Advice

Knowledge and experience makes a huge difference in productivity. The less you know about a software hurdle, the more time you will need to bang your head against your desk as you search for answers. Code online is written by humans and is error prone. One bug often leads to another. If it's a difficult software issue it might be very hard to find a clear answer online. You have to understand the systems, trying random stuff doesn't always work. If you understand what works and what doesn't then you can find your own solution.

I loved doing an internship because it helped me to better understand what I was looking for in a career and gain experience before I committed to a full time position.

What I wish was different

I wish that I would have been taken a little bit more seriously as a team member even though I was an intern.

Networking is really great, but someone shouldn't be afraid to apply for a position just because they don't know anybody within the company.

I wish I had gotten into the lab a couple years earlier, so I could have had more time to get used to the process and do actual work.

Don't get frustrated, but rather commit more to the process when things don't work.

I enjoyed the lab environment and my first experience in a laboratory setting. I was passionate about the work I was doing which definitely added to my experience.

I wish there were more opportunities to branch out of my specific role that I was assigned.

Advice

Talking to your professors is one of the best ways to get involved in research. Simply asking around can get you pretty far in terms of getting experience in a lab.

I wish I had known about how to get these positions. I was completely lost on how to ask a mentor to be part of their lab.

Lookup mentors and their research. Email every research you are interested in. Be confident!

Thanks to my boss being friendly and understanding, I was able to make my own schedule over the summer and work anywhere from 0 - 40 hours a week. The environment is very accepting and friendly regardless of experience.

If anything were to be different, I would wish that there were more summer projects to work on.

Find yourself a job that makes you feel valued and appreciated as both a person and an employee. Positivity can go a long way!
