Software Engineer Intern

June - September 2022 • Seattle, WA

What I liked

I felt that this internship gave me a really clear idea of what it’s like to work in this position, and it really taught me a lot about both coding and working in a team.

What I wish was different

I did feel that the team I was placed with was a little too busy to have an intern at the time (they were down several developers and my mentor was often on call and didn’t have a lot of time to answer questions and provide code reviews). My project was often stalled waiting for someone to be available to approve the current code. If the team has been up on developers and not being rushed through their own work, things would have gone much smoother.

Advice

Being able to search for answers on your own to questions is a very important skill, and invaluable in being able to save the harder questions for your mentor when they have a busy schedule.

WHS Specialist Intern

May - July 2023 • Colorado Springs, CO

What I liked

Coworkers, housing, learning opportunities, compensation.

What I wish was different

I wish they had been honest about any of their interns actually receiving a full-time offer. As far as I am aware, no one was given a full-time offer after completing their internship.

Advice

Do all that you can to complete the intern project you will be assigned by Amazon. If you do that, they should have no reason not to give you a full-time offer.

Junior Software Developer

April 2017 • San Luis Obispo, CA

What I liked

The culture and the attention and care each student receives is amazing. The quality of work interns receive here is not just any intern level work. It actually goes into production and helps hundreds, if not thousands, of people every day. Everyone there wants you to succeed to grow as a person and as a software developer. Flexible with your school schedule.

What I wish was different

Advice

Definitely apply here, it will boost your career and personal skills to another level. You will learn things here that you will not be able to anywhere else. Just a tip, the in person interview is HARD. Make sure to prepare for it as soon as possible by practicing a lot of coding questions.

Associate Worker - Seasonal Hire

May - September 2019 • Richmond, VA

What I liked

Weekly pay schedule, no dress code, consistent hours

What I wish was different

expectations need to be lowered, general organization needs to be improved, an increase in the variety of shifts available is overdue

Advice

one must be fully mentally and physically committed to the workload at Amazon. If you work at Amazon solely for the above-average hourly wage, you will be worn out by the end of your first week. Since you have a set schedule it's easy to mentally prepare yourself for work in the future, not to mention the work is always consistent, meaning you're constantly moving packages and not dealing with unpredictable costumers.

Software Developer Intern

May - August 2018 • Tempe, AZ

What I liked

My team was great. I learned a lot about how software development is done in the industry but also had a bunch of fun getting out of Nebraska and having new experiences.

What I wish was different

I felt a bit under prepared when I first started. There us a disconnect between school and industry

Advice

Dont be afraid to leave your comfort zone be that leaving your home town or not applying for jobs because you feel inadequate. All that dies is limit your oportunities.

SDE Intern

June - September 2017 • Cupertino, CA

What I liked

They give you a lot of freedom to implement the project your are given. They give you an overall goal to reach and you are expected to build an effective solution on your own in a manner similar to that of a full time SDE.

What I wish was different

I wish I had selected Seattle as my residence location as I feel like I would have gotten a more full Amazon experience by being at the headquarters.

Advice

Manage your time effectively as you are in charge of your project. Ask for help when you need it. Try to go to Seattle if you can to check out everything Amazon has to offer. It is more difficult than most internships but the extra work pays off in terms of what you learn.

Area Manager Intern

May - August 2021 • Madison, WI

What I liked

I really enjoyed the projects I was able to complete. I was able to design and operate projects that will be continued after my departure and will save the location over $800K annually.

What I wish was different

I wish my management team was more prepared and more involved with my experience. I hardly talked to my manager, and he was not even aware I would be his intern until the day I showed up.

Advice

Large corporations are not always the best place to work. I thought I would like it, but there was not much feeling of belonging anywhere because it was such a large corporation. I felt like another number.

Data Center Technician

January 2020 • Manassas, VA

What I liked

What I liked

What I wish was different

Advice

Ask questions! The internship includes a lot of data and numbers, which can get very confusing when learning about for the first time. Don't be afraid to reach out to managers and employees, ask questions in order to learn more, and be curious! This will also help when completing the final project.
