Ascension

Nurse Intern

May 2019 • Southfield, MI

What I liked

I was able to work 1:1 with a nurse during the summer. I was able to learn by watching her and then performing skills by myself. I learned valuable nursing and communication skills throughout my time. I gained so much confidence in my nursing practice after the internship ended. Everyone on the unit was accepting and willing to help me learn.

What I wish was different

I wish I would have taken opportunities to have an off unit day. It would be interesting to see other units and work with other nurses to see how they practice.

Advice

You gain so much experience working 1:1 with a nurse. It is not the same as a nursing school rotation because you can see the whole picture of nursing rather than focusing on one or two patients. I learned what a nurse does on a day to day basis and how to organize my time.

Summer Nurse Extern

May 2019 • Southfield, MI

What I liked

I liked the one-on-one experience working along side a nurse. I received a better understanding of the daily schedule of a nurse. I feel more prepared to enter into this profession. It has also prepared me for this semester of nursing school. My critical thinking and therapeutic communication has improved since accepting this position.

What I wish was different

More opportunities to go off unit to experience different floors!

Advice

You are confident and capable enough to handle patient care! Although you may think you did not have much previous experience, you will go into a task and master it.

Computer Science Internship

May - August 2018 • Indianapolis, IN

What I liked

I liked the learning experience of how things I had learned in the classroom can be applied to the outside world. I also liked being able to discover new possibilities of my abilities on my own. I also learned that I do not want to work in an office for the rest of my life.

What I wish was different

I wish we would have had more guidance in our task. We spent the first few weeks learning about all of the stuff the company had been working on then we were turned loose to create our own application without much support or guidelines.

Advice

Even if you feel like you are working on something alone and you have no clue what you're doing, there are always others around you wanting to see you succeed. Our professors are always there to help you when you feel like you are lost.

What I wish was different

I’m not sure at the moment...

Advice

It is one of the most rewarding jobs. However, it is very demanding - physically, mentally, and emotionally. Enjoy your time off so you enjoy the time with your residents just as much.

What I liked

One manager for each intern gave the opportunity to learn directly from a mentor and ask questions. Opportunity to work on projects to find savings to implement within the company.

There was no larger project for me to work on, only small ad hoc projects - there were a lot of layoffs happening in the company at the time.

What I liked

What I wish was different

Advice

Go into any intership/job with an open mind and a strong will to do your very best. Its all about getting the most out of your experience, so take advantage of every opportunity you have to learn something new. Its not like school where you can get by, by just showing up. In order to see results in yourself you have to give it everything.

Patient Care Technician

June 2018 • Austin, TX

What I liked

I love this job and it’s my first time working in healthcare.

What I wish was different

Nothing.

Advice

Internships are okay if you want to get mediocre hands-on experience with little pay while other people do the same. Getting a job is far more beneficial and pays better, even if it doesn’t match up perfectly with your field.
