Audit Intern

July - August 2020 • Kalamazoo, MI

What I liked

I enjoyed the culture and willingness to help. I never felt like I couldn't ask someone a question. Also, I felt like I was a part of the team both while doing work and any outside activities.

What I wish was different

I wish there would have been more in person interaction and also interaction among other interns.

Advice

I would say don't be afraid to ask questions. As an intern, people know that you won't know anything and it's better to admit that you don't, ask a question, and learn how to do it. As opposed to pretending like you know how to do something and when you get given a task that you aren't prepared for, you get put in a really bad place.

Tax Intern

June - August 2020 • Columbus, OH

What I liked

The people at BDO Columbus office, specifically in the tax department, were everything I could have asked for as an intern. They were always willing to help whenever someone asked. They went out of their way to introduce themselves and interact with us. In addition, interns were given real-world work and responsibilities.

What I wish was different

Having an internship during the COVID-19 pandemic was certainly interesting. We were fully remote for the beginning of the internship. After a few weeks, we were given the option to go into the office whenever we wanted to.

Advice

I would suggest to ask as many questions as possible. Whether it be a question about the work you are doing or about the experience of a professional you are working with, people at BDO are happy to answer. In addition, trying to get involved in as many different things as possible is beneficial to the growth of an intern.

What I liked

I really enjoyed the people I worked with! They were so welcoming and patient, which definitely helped ease my nerves going into the internship. BDO also did a great job of helping us stay connected despite the virtual nature of the internship, and I felt like I was able to make meaningful connections in addition to gaining exposure to the Audit profession.

Audit Intern

January - March 2018 • Atlanta, GA

What I liked

The culture in the office was very positive and provided a competitive, but rewarding experience. I enjoyed the difficult challenges and the exposure to many different day-to-day tasks. Working on several clients provided me the opportunity to expand my learning and earn a better understanding of various industries. The upper-level management were always available and more than willing to assist in any way they could.

What I wish was different

No notable changes would be made to this well-organized internship. I believe it is on a very good track.

Advice

During busy season for the audit practice, the hours can sometimes be demanding and the work may seem to interfere with your personal life. However, I would encourage other interns to embrace the challenges and come to work everyday with a positive attitude. Working with other team members is always more effective when the synergy is in an optimistic mindset and clients will notice this as well. Try to learn as many new skills as possible during this internship because it will certainly pay off when you are employed full-time.
