Flight Test Engineer

June - August 2020 • Arlington, TX

What I liked

I liked the fact that I was able to attend in person and work closely with the product (Bell 525 helicopters). My coworkers were friendly and very knowledgeable. They loved their jobs and telling people about what they did.

What I wish was different

I felt like there was a lot of time where I was not able to do anything productive, and was left to find people to talk to and learn from. Part of that was due to the circumstances, but I wish I could have been more useful. Kind of along the same line, I wish I knew more what I was supposed to do in a given day. A big portion of my job was open ended and I did not want to be clueless or bug the same people, but I also did not want to miss something I was supposed to do.

Advice

If you get an internship at Bell, don't be afraid to ask questions. I felt like one of the least qualified people there, and I certainly was, but the internship was really not about what I could contribute to Bell, it was about what Bell could teach me. Their program is basically like a big training experience, letting you learn how to be a good employee in their company.

Electrical Engineer

May 2017 - December 2018 • Hurst, TX

What I liked

Everybody was very friendly, ready to teach and get you excited about working at Bell. They let you get as involved as you want to be, and if you ask for harder challenges, you will get them.

What I wish was different

Sometimes you had to ask for more work because they didn't really had a plan for what interns would do coming in. However, once I showed my abilities, it kicked off pretty quick.

Advice

Be ready to speak up and ask for challenges if you want to really show what you can do.

I loved Bell's atmosphere of inclusion and innovation. Aerospace Engineering Intern

May - August 2018 • Fort Worth, TX

What I liked

- Endless opportunities for learning - day to day through my projects, by talking to coworkers, through access to higher level management to meet with, and through tours of various testing and manufacturing facilities. - Given meaningful work - my name is now on two drawings of parts of the AH-1Z. In order to implement my projects I had to present and sell them to the government, and I was given complete freedom and trust to do so. - The Bell employees and my fellow interns were friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable. - The HR department does a great job running the intern program itself - well organized, lots of resources, always available to answer questions. - Bell is owned by Textron. All Textron interns get access to all business unit opportunities before the general public does - I got return offers for Bell and Textron Systems!

What I wish was different

Honestly, not much! The only thing I really didn't like was the weather, but that was expected with Texas summers.

Advice

- Fully commit to the experience! Bell and Textron are really looking to invest in and develop their interns to become world-class engineers. Take advantage of all of the learning and networking you can. You're working within a short walk of some of the best helicopter engineers in the world! - Consider applying to Boot Camp - that's how I got my foot in the door.

Procurement Intern

May - August 2018 • Amarillo, TX

What I liked

It's a really good first internship program. They do a really good job of getting you real hands-on experience. The management is really good at making sure you have the tools you need to be successful. There's a lot of opportunity to go around Textron, not just at Bell and definitely utilize that!

What I wish was different

I wish there was more interaction between different departments. They had tried to do somethings but it wasn't until the last week of the internship, and that was hard to feel like it mattered at that point.

Advice

There's a lot of room to succeed, but you have to really take initiative. Saying to yourself, "I'm just going to do it because I need to do gain experience" is super important. Don't be afraid, and they're all super nice, so they're willing to help!
