Housekeeping Cleaner

May - August 2019 • Arcata, CA

What I liked

I enjoyed my summer job mainly because of how united my group was. We worked together as a team to complete tasks and our supervisor was always there helping us as well.

What I wish was different

I wish we had gotten paid a bit more, but we were always given enough time to complete tasks, so we were not always rushed.

Advice

It can be a tough job, but if you are lucky enough to have the same supervisor I had, your experience should be fun.

AS Presents Representative

January 2017 • Arcata, CA

What I liked

Working with the community and getting their input on what type of events they would like on campus. Managing a two-hundred thousand dollar budget was definitely a great learning experience as well.

What I wish was different

I wish I could have had the position longer but the position is limited to only 1 year per person.

Advice

Dont let the budget scare you, use it for the best of the community and be responsible on how it is manged.

What I liked

I liked that it was job/ career I have wanted to do in future which was handling a network for a company and also that great experience and knowledge I received working alongside my boss who had a lot to teach me

What I wish was different

the level of work to have been a bit higher but that can only come with experience hopefully I get the opportunity to return and be able to work at higher level with what I have learned working the job an what I have now learned during the school year

Advice

do not be scared to as question even if it has nothing to do with the job on hand but something related. it could possibly be a learning experience for both you and the person answering. but simply ask questions so overall the experience will be that much better. I asked every question that crossed my mind so I could learn as much as I could while hands-on in the field instead of in a classroom.

What I liked

The technical aspects of the job that suited my skills.

What I wish was different

When uploading my hiring material to handshake, I was not able to upload an Excel spreadsheet, which was what the job posting asked for.

Even if you think you won't get a job you want, apply anyway because the worst that can happen is that you don't get it, which is what you expected in the first place.

Library Scholar Intern

January - August 2018 • Arcata, CA

What I liked

I really enjoyed getting to know more about the sheer amount of resources that the library has - not just in Special Collections's map, photo, book, and newspaper resources, but also the other resources that the library as a whole offers in integration with Special Collections. The opportunity to do work in partnership with the National Park Service as well felt really motivating because my work really mattered and it would help any researchers who happen to use the website we helped create. Getting to present at a conference for the Society of California Archivists was wonderful as well -- I got to learn about other aspects of archival from other librarians across California, and the networking opportunities didn't hurt, either. Since I grew up in Humboldt County, learning more about the history behind all our natural resources here was very insightful. As an intern for the library, supervisors understand that school and your personal life are priorities as well, and with the support of my supervisors I was easily able to maintain a reasonable work-school balance.

Archivist Intern

June 2018 • Arcata, CA

What I liked

I enjoyed learning about library and archive science, and being able to network with people within my college and throughout the local community. It was also incredibly cool to be able to handle documents and restore and preserve them so that others in the future can learn from them.

What I wish was different

It would have been nice to have more structured hours, since we were allowed to schedule our own. It was sometimes difficult to collaborate with my coworkers.

Advice

I would tell anyone who is interested in doing a similar project to be diligent about scheduling hours and keeping track of them, and to have a good playlist available. As fun as it was to restore and digitize old materials, some of the process could get tedious after awhile!
