What I liked

I love knowing that I am helping those who are hard of hearing or deaf communicate with their loved ones with every call.

What I wish was different

I wish we had more training of what to expect when working here. It was mostly based on training profiles, which is good. But not enough on procedure on what else comes with the job like scheduling. A lot of what is told comes from Team Leads who can sometimes have the information wrong.

Advice

My advice would be to understand that it is ok to mess up. They don't expect perfection. Don't be afraid to ask questions.

What I liked

Good training and support

What I wish was different

It's not a job for social people, it's really isolating.

Advice

There's options for people who want to climb in wage and position, and several locations in Utah if you're planning on moving.

What I liked

Flexible hours, laid back work environment, above minimum wage pay

What I wish was different

It’s a desk job so it was hard to sit for 5+ hours.... I missed working retail and getting all my steps in

Advice

If you’re a college student - this job is perfect! They work around your school schedule and it’s a good chinch of change to put in your pocket and when there’s downtime you can work on homework

What I liked

Fairly easy job, and the hours are extremely flexible.

What I wish was different

It was just a job to hold me over for the summer, so there isn't really anything I would have changed. More pay is always nice though.

Advice

With their hours being so flexible, I could continue working even after the summer around my school schedule.

What I liked

The supervisors and coworkers were great.

What I wish was different

The job is fairly straightforward and I don't know if anything can be changed. I suppose the way that clear calls were graded could be changed slightly.

Advice

Imagine this: you have to listen to old ladies who can't do the things they used to do, so they try to make a 5- minute conversation about their conversation interesting in order to spice up their day. Also, they are living paycheck to paycheck on social security and their kids are asking for money. Listening to this is depressing, so make sure that this is a stepping stone.

What I liked

Nice location; job related to professional interests; low-stress

What I wish was different

Greater flexibility in scheduling; more engaging work

Advice

You have to know what kind of goals or aspirations you have about your work. The best work is that which lets you feel a sense of personal progression and accomplishment. I didn't feel as much progression as I would have liked at this job, which is why I will likely seek elsewhere for a job in the future.

Communication Assistant

April 2017 - July 2018 • Meridian, ID

What I liked

Self-driven environment with simple objectives. Nice low-level employees.

What I wish was different

It was too robotic and monotonous. I felt like everything I did was too planned out and strict. The 15 and thirty minute breaks felt more like a 3 minute panic rather than a real chance to unwind.

Advice

It's unlikely that you will want to stay for too long, but this is a good short-term option for reasonable pay. Staying too long in the environment seems to have some psychological consequences for many employees.

What I liked

I really enjoy the flexibility they give you. You have a set schedule every week, with the same time and day. As long as you work a minimum of 15 hours, you can split those hours on whatever days and however long. I also like how supportive and open all of the co-workers, supervisors, and managers are. They truly care and they want you to grow within the company, if that is what you want as well. It's probably the most flexible, well-balanced summer job you can have.

What I wish was different

There's not much that I would say I wish would be different. It's a very simple, straightforward summer job, one that allows you to balance school and other personal affairs. Maybe I wish the training was a bit more flexible, but even so, for me, it was totally flexible.

Advice

I think the one piece of advice that I would share is to just respect and follow the rules they have placed, especially with phones and distractions. It's a service job, and you are trying to make communication experiences normal for those who are hard-of-hearing or deaf.

Communcations Assisstant

June 2016 • Meridian, ID

What I liked

I used to like that the job was more flexible with students and allowed for opportunities to complete homework. I like that the job has very flexible hours and scheduling. I like that this job allows for employees to make their own schedules and choose how many hours they want to work and their schedule stays constant until the employee requests a schedule changed. Schedules can be changed every 75 days which aligns well with new semesters.

What I wish was different

I wish that the job was so monotonous and repeating. I believe if their were a way to make the job more active instead of sitting and staring at a screen for hours on end would help employees have a better work day experience.

Advice

One piece of advice I will share about this experience is I wouldn't recommend this job to someone who has to be constantly moving and active. This job can be mentally draining and people can burn out from it quickly. It is a good job and works well with students who can only work part time.

What I liked

Fantastic benefits for even part-time employees. Clean workspaces and break rooms. Great work/life balance. Supportive management.

What I wish was different

Once you are graduated from training, they put you on the call floor right away and expect you to take live calls all of the time. The transition from training to being on the call floor is tough.

Advice

Training is the toughest part of the job and can be a little overwhelming, but things do get easier after that.
