What I liked

I loved the atmosphere. Everyone was doing their best even though we were all tired. Being able to help youth grow in so many ways was very humbling.

What I wish was different

Advice

Be sure to not stress about being unfamiliar with everything, just enjoy every second, and ask when you don't know something.

What I liked

What I wish was different

Advice

My best advice from working at this job is to always work somewhere where the end is worth the means. I was working 18 hour days, every day, with meetings on Saturdays and Sundays. It was a huge demand on my time, but the end results of each week at EFY made all the hard work worth it.

Camp Counselor

May - August 2019 • Provo, UT

What I liked

I loved the personal experience of working with youth! It was a very rewarding experience to have a direct connection with youth every day, teaching them about different principles for living.

What I wish was different

Communication between the main office and the counselors at the camps was occasionally difficult, but it was a large program with over 600 different people working all over the country. It was understandable.

Advice

If one were to become a counselor at EFY/FSY, I would highly suggest making time for yourself on weekends. Every week is long and difficult, and Saturdays were necessary to prepare for the week ahead. Whether it's catching up on sleep or looking ahead to the next week's priorities, look ahead to the next week.

The best part of the job was spending time with the youth and seeing them grow every week. It was a fun and uplifting environment and everyone was friendly. I will always treasure my experience with EFY.

What I wish was different

I didn't get much sleep while I worked, but I am not sure that could have changed. Other than that, it was all great.

This is a job designed to build the character of both the youth and you. Take advantage of the opportunity and treasure the experience while you have it. It will go quickly.

Youth Counsellor

May - August 2019 • Provo, UT

What I liked

I loved being a part of a program that had such an impact on me as a teenager. The people are amazing, the kids are hilarious, and I learned so much about how to be the sort of leader that people follow because they want to (and not because they have to).

What I wish was different

My only wish is that it never ended!

Advice

My one piece of advice would be to OWN the handbook. Know it inside and out and follow it like a baby duck follows its mom!

Youth Counselor

May - August 2019 • Provo, UT

What I liked

I loved how I could apply knowledge from my major into every aspect of how I worked. I always wanted my youth to feel open and accepted in my group, so I did my best to get to know them and provide an open, exciting environment. I practiced giving and accepting feedback with my close coworkers and I enjoyed learning new work habits from each one of them.

What I wish was different

I wish I could have done it for more time but with more breaks in between! Sometimes it felt like I didn't have enough time to recharge. I also would have loved to be on the more administrative side, where I could help make more decisions and set the mood for meetings.

Advice

Embrace it! I loved going all in and finding out new things about myself, like I don't mind dancing funny if it makes others feel comfortable or I'm actually not too bad of a singer. I learned that I can do hard things in less-than-ideal situations because I pushed myself. I learned to trust in my abilities and in God's grace and it was an amazing time.
