Insurance Underwriter Intern

June - August 2020 • New York City, NY

What I liked

The underwriting team was extremely helpful in familiarizing me with the insurance industry since I did not have any prior experience going in. Through their patience and guidance, I was introduced to the possibility of pursuing a career as an underwriter.

What I wish was different

Due to the circumstances surrounding COVID-19, Everest had taken the step to convert its internship program to fully remote. While this transition was handled well and I was made to feel actively part of the team, I wish I had the true experience of working in a corporate environment. I perhaps lacked the same social interaction and experience I would have gained working in person to determine if this career is fit for me.

Advice

Do not be afraid to ask questions or reach out to team members to learn more about their position. Being an intern is a learning experience, so take advantage of that while you can. Interact with your superiors, set up coffee chats, and build your network. This will not only allow you to determine whether this career path is a good fit for you, but it will create beneficial relationships if you choose to pursue this career further.

Underwriting Intern

June 2018 • New York City, NY

What I liked

Mentors were great. Everyone in the office was helpful and ready to teach. Program included weekly meetings to discuss the different business segments in the company and interaction with leaders of company in intimate settings.

What I wish was different

The communication could have been better. I didn't know what business segment or type of coverage I would be working on until I arrived at the office.

Advice

Talk to everyone in the office! Even if it's just a simple "Good morning, how are you?" I found that the more I talked to the other full-times in the office, the more relationships I was able to build. This led to more opportunities to learn about their projects and potential to work with them.
