What I liked

This summer I had the amazing opportunity to intern as a Sustainability Process Engineering Intern in ExxonMobil’s Technology and Engineering Company. It truly has been a transformative experience that redefined the way I think about energy! I would like to thank Mariam Jamoussi and Marcel Staedter alongside the rest of the Sustainability team for their invaluable insight through my exciting project. I’d also like to shoutout the Future Leaders Academy for supporting me as I developed lifelong skills through real, challenging work. #weareexxonmobil #exxonmobil

I loved the culture within the group I was working with primarily. I enjoyed the sense of ownership I was given to perform my task in the manner I thought was the most efficient and effective for me personally. I enjoyed the growth I achieved as an electrical engineer.

What I wish was different

Advice

Ask plenty of questions. Be specific and direct about what you ask. Also, seek feedback and implement it into your development!

Instrument Engineer

May - August 2020 • Spring, TX

What I liked

I loved getting to be a part of an R&D team for a major corporation like ExxonMobil! Even though I was just an intern, the work I was given felt like it had weight in the company. Also, there were 60+ other ExxonMobil interns in the Houston area that I got to hang out with and get close to which really helped with living in a new city.

What I wish was different

I wish I had a bit more time at the internship to fully finish all of the projects I was given. It's apparently normal to not be able to complete all of the work given to you at this company but I'm not a fan of leaving things unfinished.

Advice

If you have the opportunity to intern outside of where you normally live, definitely take it. The experience you get having to fully understand a new city and culture is incredible.

I had independence in my project and I was able to see how my work was able to add value to the company. Everyone I worked with was very open and great to talk to, and the practical experience that came from working in a plant was very valuable.

What I wish was different

I wish that COVID had not caused a company-wide hiring freeze

While the project is a very important piece of the job, it is absolutely essential to meet and network with other employees and interns, especially those who do not come from the same educational or professional background.

Project Engineering Intern

June - August 2020 • Baton Rouge, LA

What I liked

Great company to work for with real, challenging work from day one. I appreciated their relocation assistance as well, which was a substancian help and covered all travel expenses.

What I wish was different

Due to the ongoing pandemic, I had to finish the last few weeks of this internship remotely, which was unfortunate. I would have loved to spend more time in the field but was very grateful for the time I was able to do just that.

Advice

Do not be afraid to seek out expertise and mentorship, even if only during the short duration of an internship. It is important to challenge yourself and set your own pace as well.

Sales and Marketing Intern

May - August 2019 • Houston, TX

What I liked

It was clear that the company really cares about their employees and interns. The projects assigned to interns are challenging, but they are very rewarding because the interns have to figure out how to solve problems without instructions. While there are numerous resources and everyone is tremendously helpful, how to go about completing the project is up to the intern. The company hosted intern events such as trivia, scavenger hunts, a viewing of How to Train your Dragon with a live symphony, and a Houston Astros Baseball game. There were also numerous opportunities to network with executives and leaders in the company. Because the internship was at main campus and contained approximately 11,000 employees, there are so many different people with different experiences to talk to.

What I wish was different

There was very little about the internship that I would change, though I will say that without networking to the extreme, it is difficult to get a second internship or full time offer in a different role (e.g. going from downstream to chemicals or upstream to downstream). Supervisors and HR do their best to place you in a role that you want, but swapping business lines is difficult unless you network with someone who then wishes to hire you.

Advice

Networking is probably the most important for an internship. Succeeding in the project is critical, but supervisors actually encourage the interns to take coffee breaks and chat with someone from a different part of the company. Learning as much as possible will make the internship more rewarding and meeting new people can help lead to jobs.

Financial IT Intern

May - August 2019 • Houston, TX

What I liked

I loved the autonomy that I was given to do my project. My manager was the best and was always looking out for us. The pay and benefits were amazing. Houston is a great city with many things to do. The work was interesting and had an impact on the company. Your coworkers treat you like an employee and not just an intern. They provided tons of training and activities for interns. Accepted return offer very quickly.

What I wish was different

I wish I had been more proactive in the beginning of the project because I felt like I was scrambling to present at the end. I wish I had talked to more people on the job, so I could get a feel outside of Financials IT. I wish I had participated in more leadership or coordinated events.

Advice

One thing I would advise is taking the time to learn your project well. Not just your part. They did not expect knowledge right away, but they expect you to be able to talk about what you learned as a big picture. Ask as many questions as possible and if you need info get it at the beginning of the project and not halfway through.

Digital Innovation Intern

May - August 2019 • Spring, TX

What I liked

I really appreciated the challenging and impactful work I was able to do as an intern. My intern project took me the entire summer to complete and I could see how it would actually provide value to the company. I was also able to expand on my network of other Black engineers while there. Additionally, I was pushed to develop a lot of soft skills that I don't have as many opportunities to work on while at school.

What I wish was different

Advice

Spend a lot of your time networking with people. Completing your intern project is obviously important, but so is making sure that people know and remember you. I would try to meet about three new people each week. You never know how they may be able to help you later on.
