Gail Sheehy

Social Media Intern

June - August 2018 • New York City, NY

What I liked

I got a lot of hands-on experience in film and journalism. I got a lot of connections, and developed a relationship with Gail that's become extremely beneficial for my growth and expansion. I got do research on a host of topics, interview people around NYC and work on film projects. I learned a lot and continue to do work for Gail and have kept well in touch with her! She is a great mentor.

What I wish was different

I wish there was more clarity on what the job entailed, specifically from Gail herself. This improved over time, and there was definitely a positive aspect to how flexible the job was. Basically-- the job was what you made of it.

I'd say, always be prepared and willing to go outside of your comfort zone. My "social media" internship ended up involving a lot more than social media, and I got to explore mediums I had never explored before, and it was illuminating! I learned that film is a huge passion of mine. Bring your strengths full-force into anything, communicate often and openly, and don't be afraid to speak up for your ideas and passions, if you wish for certain things to be incorporated into your duties. You'll end up getting a lot more out of it if you advocate for yourself. ALSO, be prepared to deal with challenging people and situations and try to keep a level head through it all. Don't be afraid to ask questions and admit to your faults. Communicate, communicate, communicate.
