Garmin

Software Engineer Intern

May - August 2019 • Olathe, KS

What I liked

I liked working on a team of software engineers on products that me and my entire team are passionate about. I enjoyed being treated as an entry level engineer and being entrusted with meaningful tasks on my team. It was very rewarding to see the results of my work get released to the public as the summer progressed. I also really liked the social aspect of my internship. Garmin employs over 200 interns at their HQ in the greater Kansas City area making it really easy for everyone to find friends to spend time with outside of work.

What I wish was different

I wish more teams at Garmin would allow college students to work part-time during the school year remotely, when there is no Garmin office in their area.

Advice

Try to find a business segment you are passionate about and be yourself. Don't be afraid to explore new things and ask others for help. Treat your internship as a chance to see if you see yourself working full time in the industry instead of just trying to prove your skills to your team.

The people that I worked with were some of the kindest and smartest people I've ever worked with. All of them wanted to help the customer or an engineer however possible.
