Hume Christian Camps

Wait Staff

May - August 2019 • Hume, CA

What I liked

I loved interacting with campers everyday. They were energetic and kind. I also loved the people I got to work with. My bosses were some of the sweetest people I have ever met, and building relationships with them was a pleasure.

What I wish was different

The only thing I would change is the fact that I had to leave a week early for school. I loved working there this summer and would have treasured another week.

Advice

I would advise future Hume employees to sleep while at camp! The relationships built are great but the reason you are there is to work and you cannot work as well if you stay up all night with friends. Hume is small and it's easy to get wrapped up in drama. Please don't. There are better things to pass the time with than small-town gossip.

Registrar

May - July 2018 • Hume, CA

What I liked

I liked that we got to work at a Christian organization that was so passionate about youth ministry. It was a growing experience being part of the summer staff. I loved that there was always a new experience even though there were multiple weeks of camp.

What I wish was different

I wish I had more interaction with other people visiting the campus rather than just those in my office.

Advice

Really dive into community, it's so easy to feel lonely at Hume, but the community is there.

Dish washer

June - August 2018 • Hume, CA

What I liked

I loved the atmosphere of the workplace and the opportunity to serve. The full time staff were very approachable and generous toward the summer staff. The surrounding nature is gorgeous!

What I wish was different

It was difficult working 6 days a week with some overtime. It left barely enough time to rest and recharge.

Advice

Working at Hume is great, as long as you aren't trying to make money. You'll make an impact and make great friends though, and that makes it worth it.

High Adventure Guide

May - August 2018 • Hume, CA

What I liked

I loved being able to work with kids from as young as eight to as old as eighteen. I loved being able to see God change lives every single day and watch him work through our staff to further His kingdom. I love that my job was fun and that I was able to bond with campers while guiding them through things that I found to be really fun such as topes courses, zip lines, giant swings, and repelling!

What I wish was different

Nothing. It was my second summer working at Hume as a High Adventure Guide except this summer, I had a higher role than last summer. I loved everything about it, nothing needs to change.

Advice

I would say to always push yourself in everything you do. For our ropes courses specifically, If you are afraid of heights, push yourself to finish. I am not afraid of heights, so this job was not scary to me or my co-workers, but to many students and guests it was. And to see the look on their faces and how proud they were that they finished the course was definitely an amazing thing t o see with this job and very encouraging.

Advice

It’s an entry level job, but in the hardest of environments. You are isolated in the mountains away from all forms of comfort, and all you have to depend on is the Lord and He sure does deliver. It is absolutely beautiful and I learned so much about who God is and who He says I am.
