Love Thy Neighborhood

Social Justice Intern

June - August 2020 • Louisville, KY

What I liked

I loved the Christ centered community and the outreach we engaged in weekly. The relationships I created with my housemates and neighbors are ones that I won't soon forget.

What I wish was different

I wish that there had been less restrictions because of COVID. We could have taken outreach to the next level.

Advice

Don't be complacent with anything while you're with LTN. Look for ways to grow and engage all the time because you will get so much more out of the experience.

Outreach assistant

May - August 2019 • Louisville, KY

What I liked

Was able to partner with a non-profit of my choice that aligned with my passions and was able to be hands on with the population I served. We also lived in low-income neighborhoods, the same neighborhoods as the people we served, so we were immersing ourselves in their culture and socioeconomic realities.

What I wish was different

There was assigned curriculum that we went through over the course of the summer, which I enjoyed; however, I thought some of the topics discussed were biased and supported a specific agenda.

Advice

If you do this internship, know that is is mentally challenging, but so rewarding and allows for so much personal growth. It truly was an eye opening experience and was life changing. Seeing world from the perspective of another person while living in intentional community is a once in a lifetime opportunity.

Book Editing & Publishing Assistant

May - August 2019 • Louisville, KY

What I liked

At LTN, I felt that every experience was an opportunity for growth. Not only did I learn so much about my service site (Book Editing at Sojourn), but the team puts hard work and dedication to make sure the interns are building life skills such as budgeting, time management, and cultivating healthy relationships with self, teammates, and the community. Everyone both at the LTN Office and at Sojourn was friendly, engaging, and supportive. I was really able to make Louisville my home for 11 weeks.

What I wish was different

I don't wish anything had been different about the nonprofit itself, but I am curious about what would have been different if I had brought my own transportation or delved deeper into the surrounding community.

Advice

If you're thinking of doing LTN, come with an open mind and open hands! Look at everything as an opportunity to learn and grow (and don't be afraid of support raising!)

Nonprofit Leadership Intern

May - August 2018 • Louisville, KY

What I liked

I loved being able to connect with students like myself and work for a nonprofit that is making such a HUGE impact of the underprivileged in Louisville.

What I wish was different

I wish I had been more prepared when it came to what I was going to do. I came in with little to no clue with what I would actually be doing.

Advice

Be open-minded , you are going to learn a lot and it won't all be easy to swallow . It will be a growing experience, but it will be so worth it!
