Business Development & Communications Intern

May - December 2021 • San Francisco, CA

What I liked

During my internship, I worked one-on-one with founder, Jenny Hwa. As a Business Development and Communications Intern, I was given sanctions over our social media posting and engagement, as well as managing our Loyale Ambassador team. I learned a lot of hands-on experience despite the position being partly remote. We were lucky enough to meet face-to-face several times at events over the course of my internship. These events allowed me to practice my sales experience in addition to getting a better understanding of Loyale's consumer base. Overall, working at Loyale Studio was the perfect transition as I begin to make my way from college to the workforce post-grad. I would recommend any student looking for more learning experience to consider working for Loyale Studio.

What I wish was different

There was no real downside of working at the company. One small con that can also be seen as a pro is the small team size. I tend to thrive in collaborative environments, therefore, I would have enjoyed working with a bigger team. However, the weekly one-on-ones and mentoring easily made up for it.

Advice

I would recommend any future interns take full advantage of the great learning opportunity that this position has to offer. In addition, I definitely recommend going to as many in-person events as you can because they are a blast to work at!

Business Development and Communications Intern

January - May 2021 • San Francisco, CA

What I liked

Working directly with Jenny at Loyale allowed me to expand on my classroom knowledge immensely and put it to use in the real world. She provided me with resources that guided me to successful business development as well as taught me amazing tricks about the virtual world. We had weekly check in meetings where we would discuss business but also use it as a space to talk about life during the pandemic. Jenny gave me the freedom to complete the assigned tasks in a fashion suitable for my schedule and the freedom to develop ideas for future outreach opportunities. Loyale is an ethically driven company leaving a meaningful impact on more than just linens- she does a wonderful job emphasizing her role in the community being a small, local company.

What I wish was different

Like many other students, I interned for Jenny during the COVID-19 pandemic making the internship 100% remote. I wish we had the opportunity to meet in person and meet the other members of the Loyale team. I would have loved to see where the magic behind Loyale occurs.

Advice

Be eager to think creatively and ready to share your thoughts and ideas. This internship gives you freedom and space to express your suggestions while receiving constructive feedback. Jenny has so much insight on business development and opportunities which can be translated to any area of work you complete, whether it be for Loyale or in the classroom.

Social Media + Communications Internship

January - June 2021 • San Francisco, CA

What I liked

Working at Loyale was one of the most unique experiences I have undergone thus far in my college career. Jenny is an extraordinary entrepreneur who has a plethora of knowledge on all things media, marketing, product production -- you name it. I loved how hands-on my internship was, despite being entirely remote. Jenny made herself extremely accessible throughout the entirety of my time at Loyale and even taught me how to be a better communicator along the way. I primarily focused on data collection for a new marketing approach we were exploring, conducted marketing outreach, and managed social media engagement on a weekly basis. Overall, Jenny made me feel like a valuable team player and genuinely appreciated the work I was able to contribute.

What I wish was different

Like most working college students, I wish my internship had been an in-person experience. Jenny briefly talked about her collaborative workspace in SF and numerous in-person events that Loyale usually participates in throughout the year, which I would have loved to have experienced. Additionally, I would have enjoyed more opportunities to work on developing visual marketing and/or social media content, but I understand that due to time constraints and the virtual work setting this was not possible.

Advice

Come into this experience well equipped with knowledge about Loyale's ethical mission. This company is about far more than just linens; it's about uniting communities through a mutual love of cuisine. Additionally, don't be afraid to share your opinions with Jenny. She loves feedback and new ideas, which ultimately improves the quality of your internship.

Marketing + Communications Assistant

February - April 2020 • San Francisco, CA

What I liked

My experience at Loyale was not only memorable, but also a job I will never forget. Working alongside Jenny was very inspiring as she has founded Loyale as a combination of her love for design and cooking. The company's ethical mission proves to be their unique selling point and why I was interested in working here. Loyale gave me real insight into all the inter-workings of a small company from manufacturing, event scheduling to looking for potential ambassadors. I was able to leverage my digital marketing skills to contribute to her SEO Keyword research and manage Loyale's social media presence. Jenny always emphasized that I was a valuable member of her team while teaching me valuable lessons on what it takes to be a female entrepreneur. This internship is highly collaborative, creative and rewarding.

What I wish was different

I personally came at a time where Loyale was developing new exciting products and my internship was unfortunately cut short due to the COVID-19 crisis. I would've loved to see the launch of these products and attended the events that were planned.

Advice

Be ready to bring your creativity to the table! Jenny is always open to new ideas and insights from your previous experiences. The more energy you put into this internship, the more rewarding it will be.

Marketing and Events Assistant

August - December 2019 • San Francisco, CA

What I liked

Jenny is passionate about her products and ensuring that interns learn about the startup business and get the chance to bring forward valuable input regarding the marketing strategy of Loyale Studio. Jenny is truly passionate about ethical fashion and kitchenware as she works to bring about change within the fashion industry and food industry. The internship is amazing for students interested in gaining more marketing experience, social media experience and social impact within the fashion industry. The internship seems daunting at first as you will be working directly with the founder but she values your honest input and gives you a lot of responsibility with creating your own marketing strategies for social media outreach. The internship also taught me a lot about creating copy, developing social media marketing strategies and social media outreach among professionals in the restaurant industry. Jenny is also accommodating of your school schedule and works within it as most work can be done remotely. Loyale Studio brought beneficial insight into the fashion industry and the operations of startups. The business model is true to its mission of making the food industry more equitable and sustainable.

What I wish was different

The internship is at a small startup with less than 10 employees so the pay is $400 dollars for four months which can seem like very little but the professional experience you would get out of this internship is worth it in the long run.

Advice

Loyale Studio is one of the few startups that actually cares about sustainability within the industry; sustainability is more than just a business strategy to sell more products it is tied to every aspect of the Loyale Studio brand. Loyale Studio also donates part of their profits to La Cocina which is a non-profit organization that supports immigrant women in starting their business. The internship is perfect for students looking to gain experience in all aspects of a startup including: marketing, communications, business research and social media outreach.
