National Renewable Energy Corporation

Development and GIS Intern

June - August 2020 • Charlotte, NC

What I liked

I enjoyed that I got to learn about a lot of different software. I learned how to use GIS software to create maps, as well as Microsoft Excel and LandVision software. I also enjoyed that the internship allowed for a lot of flexibility in the type of work I was able to complete. For example, I was able to complete a project on the feasibility of incorporating pollinator meadows at solar farms since ecology based solutions to human problems is a big interest of mine. Overall, I felt like I learned a lot about the renewable energy industry, energy markets, and my own personal interests.

What I wish was different

The entirety of the internship was online due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It was also shortened by a few weeks. As a result, I feel like I missed out on some of the social networking aspects of the internship. I feel like I would have liked going into the office to have a change of scenery, as well as to build friendships and connections that would be vital for my professional future.

Advice

Self motivation and drive is a big characteristic required in this internship. Especially with the online dynamic, which can be challenging. It is crucial that you are able to manage your time wisely and stay on track to complete daily and overarching tasks.
