NAU Student Service Contact Center

Student Manager, Senior

October 2017 • Flagstaff, AZ

What I liked

I absolutely love my job!! I was grateful for how flexible they were when I took time off for summer vacations. The work environment is so fun, and I got to spend the summer getting to know my new team and navigating my new role as a Student Manager, Sr.

What I wish was different

There was a lot of transition over the summer. Many student workers and a handful of professional staff members left, which was challenging.

Advice

I would HIGHLY recommend getting a job based on relevant professional experience rather than pay (if you are able to make that compromise). I know I could make more money working off campus, but I would not trade this experience for the world.

Student Manager, Sr.

December 2015 - June 2019 • Flagstaff, AZ

What I liked

This job was extremely rewarding and allows you to help students through things that can seem really scary and confusing to them. I gained both a ton of knowledge on higher education and financial aid policies but also about customer service and skills necessary for pretty much any job. This is such a supportive workplace and we became a family so quickly. Our supervisors are really understanding and we are able to make our own schedules and request time off.

What I wish was different

The pay is pretty low; this is an on-campus job and nobody working in this office has any say over our pay. There is opportunity for advancement and the flexible scheduling alone made it worth it for me; but if pay is a concern for you, take that into consideration.

Advice

This job is challenging and requires students to be willing to take on a lot of information. Talking with students and parents about their charges/financial aid requires you to handle confusing and sensitive information and just because of the nature of what we're talking about, we deal with a lot of angry, frustrated, and emotional people. This requires a level of empathy, accuracy, professionalism, and an ability to not take things personally. This job is rewarding, the people are amazing, and it is honestly a fun job even when it's challenging, but if you are looking for an easy part-time job where you'll have time to do homework the whole time, I would not recommend this job for you.

What I liked

Coming to work every day was an exciting thing for me. Everyone is extremely friendly and welcoming no matter if you are new or a veteran. It's more than a job, it is a family environment where I love getting to know my coworkers every single day. I have met some of my best friends at this job and I am forever grateful. I have also gained the opportunity for professional development as I have moved up in the office. From the moment I started this job, and to this present day I have grown so much individually and professionally. The professional staff really are here for YOU and your development above all.

Advice

I would say to make sure you get to know the people around you because the people make this job worth it. The more people you get to know, the more you will enjoy this job and make lasting connections. You will experience just about every emotion you can think of, but it is a lot easier when you have people next to you who know those feelings and can help you work through them.

What I liked

I love this job! The team has become like a family to me! You get to help a lot of people and learn a lot yourself that you can benefit from. This is the longest I have kept a job and it is mainly because of the other agents I work with and my AMAZING bosses. This is the best job I have ever had.

What I wish was different

This job can be hard at times because it is a call center and a lot of people don't call in happy, but it is so rewarding!

What I liked

The Student Service Contact Center is perfect for college students because it allows you to create your own schedule. Schedule flexibility is very important in college and so having a support system that understands you are a student before a worker, is perfect. My coworkers have become my closest friends, I consider them family. Working for the Student Service Contact Center was one of the best decisions I ever made in my entire college career.

What I liked

This office is a fast-paced work environment, and is constantly growing and evolving. The supervisors are great with accommodating personal needs in the work place, and understand that you are a student first. They are really here to support the workers, and have created a very close environment.

What I wish was different

The pay. Unfortunately the supervisors don't have control over our pay, and they agree we are underpaid, but it is still a large issue.

Advice

Prepare for change, this office and out positions are constantly growing and changing, and while the supervisors do a great job at incorporating these into our workflow just be ready to make some adjustments.
