Apply! There are so many Nordstrom’s that need interns and they are looking all the time. It’s an amazing company with so much opportunity for growth and this is such a fun way in.

Salesperson

June - August 2018 • Novi, MI

What I liked

I got along well with my coworkers, which always good. This job was also the highest paying job that I've had (we had a 10/hr base pay but usually made commission off of our sales), so it was great to be able to save some money that I could put towards tuition for this year (and have a bit more spending money throughout this semester). The employee discount was also very nice.

What I wish was different

Working commission is, as my father puts it, a blood sport. It forces passive-aggressive competition, especially among employees that were making their living there.

Advice

I truly think it can be beneficial to put down the "I need to get a great internship over the summer" hat and recognize that working retail or food service can be very useful over the summer as well. These jobs often pay more (especially since many internships nowadays are unpaid) and provide great experience in how to deal formally with the public and with unhappy customers. I truly believe everyone should work customer service at least once in their life.

Sales

June 2018 • Beachwood, OH

What I liked

The freedom of this job. And the ability to express my fashion sense.

What I wish was different

It is commission based so that’s a bit rough.

Advice

It’s retail. Not everyone is going to be nice to you and it’s a competitive feel. Don’t work here if you don’t have tough skin.

Rover/Sales Associate

July - September 2018 • Los Angeles, CA

What I liked

I like that I got to work in a number of different departments since I was a rover. My second month working there, I got to work in a pop up shop for Herschel so I was selling merchandise for a brand that I was very familiar with. I also met a lot of wonderful people during my time there.

What I wish was different

I wish I could have stayed there a little longer because I was really starting to enjoy my job and I wish that I was working a sales role that allowed me to make commission.

Advice

I would say that everyone should give retail a try sometime during their life. I was very opposed to the idea of working a retail job because I didn't think I would enjoy it, and I only took the job because I was looking for a summer job and it was the one that got back to me the fastest, but it taught me a lot of skills I wouldn't have gained otherwise and a very memorable experience as well.
