Salado Isolation Mining Contractors

About Salado Isolation Mining Contractors

Salado Isolation Mining Contractors (SIMCO) is the Managing & Operating Contractor for the Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) located near Carlsbad, New Mexico.

The WIPP underground facilities comprise a mine constructed and maintained at a depth of 2,150 feet below the surface, within the Salado Formation found in southeastern New Mexico. This formation is primarily composed of evaporates to include halite (rock salts) common to the Permian Basin region of the Southwestern United States. The underground facility (the mine) serves as a permanent storage facility for transuranic nuclear waste which is a by-product of the nation’s nuclear weapons production programs.
