Office of Congresswoman Ann Wagner

foreign affairs intern

May - August 2022 • Washington, DC

What I liked

Loved giving tours of the capitol. Loved the office staff, super friendly and very candid. Loved the location and the fabulous Rayburn House staff gym.

What I wish was different

Did not like the fact that interns were unable to go to hearings and events in person if they were live streamed because the main duty was to answer the phones. Staff could have assigned more substantive work!

Advice

Don't feel bad asking for more work, I wish I did.

Congressional Intern

May - August 2019 • Washington, DC

What I liked

I loved working in the city in a job that made me feel like I was making an impact on my community at home. I was able to gain professional experience and discovered my passion for public service while expanding my network.

What I wish was different

I wish I had spent more time exploring Washington D.C. instead of focusing on work so much. The fun part about having an internship in a new city is exploring and seeing what the city has to offer!

Advice

If you obtain a Congressional Internship you should really focus on writing abilities and be able to to handle a high stress work environment. You will field constituent calls and will have to deal with very negative people very often. Practice your conflict management skills!
