ESTI

May - August 2018 • Uniontown, PA

What I liked

I really liked getting to do hands on things, like using a trimble.

What I wish was different

I wish that certain people would not act like they were better than myself and other interns. This was minor though because most of the employees I worked with were very nice and helpful!

Advice

Working with a group is a great thing! Also, no matter how much or how little you do in a job, your role is still important to the whole company.

Engineering Scientific and Technical Intern

May - August 2018 • Montoursville, PA

What I liked

PennDOT is a great company to work for if you want to experience a portion of public sector employment. The atmosphere is very relaxed, but you learn a lot from this experience. This is definitely worth interning for the summer for, and I would do it again.

What I wish was different

I wish the job hadn't been as driving intensive, as I felt I was wasting a lot of my time driving here and there.

Advice

My advice is to go to the PA jobs site on the government page, and apply as early as possible. My phone interview occurred the morning before my chem final in the fall, for a job in the summer. Look early and apply early.

Maintenance Intern

May - August 2018 • Bridgeville, PA

What I liked

I liked my co-workers and the experiences I had. I made new friends and learned a whole lot about roadway management, and how you categorize road conditions.

What I wish was different

Nothing, I really enjoyed all of this internship.

Advice

The maintenance work I did required 8 hours of driving everyday, so if you do no like driving do not go into their STAMPP program.

Engineering, Scientific, & Technical Intern

June - August 2018 • Harrisburg, PA

What I liked

In this position, I got to utilize and expand upon the GIS skills I already possessed. I also improved my problem-solving abilities and gained more experience working as part of a diverse team of individuals. The projects I completed outside of the office were equally valuable and made the summer more interesting than what I imagine it would have been without any component of fieldwork.

What I wish was different

The main aspect of this job that I wish I could change was to have been able to begin work earlier in the summer. By doing this, I wouldn't have missed as many introductory elements or field trip opportunities that were offered to the other interns.

Advice

Be confident in your abilities and be honest during the interview process about the extent of your skill set. Admitting that you don't know everything is okay as long as you show that you're a competent person who has an interesting in learning more.
