Project Morry

Unit Leader

June - August 2019 • Port Jervis, NY

What I liked

I loved the Project Morry mission. It is a non-profit that goes to under resourced intercity areas and sends children to camp for free. They also have a school year program that meets once a month in each community and helps the campers focus on school and goal setting. They also help them apply to colleges when they get older. They do a lot of social justice work and it was a great way to gain experience working with children. I was also a camper in this program so I knew a lot and was able to help those who were newly hired. I also liked how I could rely on any of my staff members for help and that self care was a priority.

What I wish was different

I wish I had known how challenging the job position was going to be. I was in charge of half of the girls camp and oversaw many different campers and staff members and did not realize how much work it was going to be.

Advice

It is the most challenging, yet most rewarding thing that you will do if you take this job. It will push you to limits you did not know you had and will teach you a lot about yourself, but will give you skills you can use for the rest of your life.

Group Leader

What I liked

The community here is very supportive and inclusive. Their is an intention placed on character, learning and fun. You will build very strong relationships with other counselors and campers.

What I wish was different

I do wish that I had more support because at times I felt like I was left alone with the campers which could get stressful.

Advice

Be ready to be challenged during long days under the sun and your campers feel like ignoring you, fighting other campers or walking away from the group. I learned and grew a lot from this experience because of its difficulty. Great experience for working with inner-city kids in a camp environment.
