UI/UX Designer Intern

March - August 2019 • Detroit, MI

What I liked

I loved my role as a UX Content Designer, even though I didn’t fully know what that meant when first coming to the company, because I learned a lot. The company culture was also great and I felt very welcomed and involved in the team.

What I wish was different

I wish I had more consistent projects to work on. I was often given many small products to focus on, but would have liked a few bigger projects that I could focus on for longer periods of time and really immerse myself.

Advice

I would say to not be intimidated. Especially at a big company like Quicken Loans, its easy to feel overwhelmed, but everyone is friendly and willing to help if you just ask questions and try to make friends. And even experts in their field are unsure of what to do sometimes, we’re all human and we’re all in this together.

Mortgage Operations Intern

May - August 2019 • Detroit, MI

What I liked

The company culture and environment. It was very laid back yet still professional, and they emphasize that everyone has a voice and their ideas and opinions matter.

What I wish was different

In my team specifically there was not very many intern like projects since it was a production role. I wish this would've been different because I felt more like a temp than an intern.

Advice

I would say that with a job like this one, where you sit at a desk it is very easy to get bored but if you set little goals for yourself it makes it a lot more entertaining because you have a challenge. I would also talk to many people/employers on the phone everyday and it is important to not take things personal. You never know what kind of day someone is having, so if they are rude to you on the phone just be extra nice because maybe they are having a bad day.

Mortgage Banking sales

May - August 2019 • Detroit, MI

What I liked

I loved the opportunity of the program. Not only did I do my sales job, but the internship program allowed me to shadow other areas within the Rock Family of Companies, as well as attend fun events that familiarized the interns with the company, its leaders, and Detroit! I would not have traded my rewarding, fun, and learned experience.

What I wish was different

I wish I would have been paid more as a mortgage banking sales intern. We were speaking with real clients and doing work that full-time employees do. Not only that, but we were getting trained on the mortgage process and took classes that had exams. We studied, worked hard, had a busy schedule (in comparison to other interns); I wish our pay would have reflected that.

Advice

Try everything, do everything. The Rock Family of Companies internship program offers so many opportunities to be immersed into what being a full-time employee is like and it is up to you to learn about it all. I'm thankful I got to shadow and attend the internship events I could because it opened my eyes to all that Quicken Loans has going on, how they live out their "isms" as a company, and how they are defying the corporate lifestyle we know today. I would totally go back to QL if they would have me.

June - August 2018 • Detroit, MI

What I liked

The Culture was amazing and the quality of experience was nice.

What I wish was different

The recruitment process wasn't the greatest for a returning intern.

Advice

Keep your network up. If I didn't have a strong network in and out of the company my summer really could've been unproductive. Also, invest in yourself and make sure you're the best option for them. If you have a strong connection group, but can't produce, then you won't make it far.

Mortgage Operations Intern

May 2018 • Detroit, MI

What I liked

I liked the experience gained at Quicken Loans. At the company, they treat interns just as they would team members, being involved with many high level projects and meetings. The internship is truly what you make of it, and you are allowed to utilize the tools offered to team members in any way that you would like to put your own ideas into action. Quicken Loans loves fresh eyes and is open to any sort of feedback that interns have to offer about the company or their processes.

What I wish was different

I do wish that interns were paid slightly higher and offered a small bank of PTO for those interns that are with the company for more than one or two intern seasons.

Advice

Interact. Make your mark wherever you can and do not be afraid to network and get your name out there by assisting with any tasks asked of you by your leader. This will get you noticed and increase your chances to gain a full time job with the company.

What I wish was different
