Manufacturing Engineering Intern

May - August 2022 • Wichita, KS

What I liked

There were lots of good intern events and opportunities to see other parts of the large company. As a Mechanical Engineering major there are 30+ full time positions each in different places in different responsibilities I would be qualified for, learning about those other jobs is important. I also got to fly a plane!

What I wish was different

Many of the intern events were in the middle of the day, this interrupted my ability to fulfil my responsibilities. I was tasked with conducting time studies, documenting the work methodology, and coming up with ideas to improve certain stages of the production line. The line runs 4am-2pm when on overtime (it was running overtime when I was there). I was not required to be there at 4am but chose to in order to do my job better and get more daylight in afternoons and Fridays off. Continuous data is far more valuable than piecemeal so having a 1pm meeting really threw a wrench in my plans. My boss contacted the intern program coordinator to excuse me from the events so I only had to go to the ones I was genuinely interested in attending, but it was a bummer there was such an opportunity cost.

Advice

Talk to people! Not in the sense of chit-chat but in the sense of collaboration to make each other's jobs easier. My job was to document the production line and find ways to improve. Mechanics building the plane know what parts of their job seem inefficient or inconvenient. Floor support ME's know all of the technical terminology in the instructions and what problems there usually are on the line. Quality Engineering knows the source of and frequency of the most costly mistakes... As engineering interns we are in a professional position to talk to all of these people and aren't expected to be too terribly smart so can ask dumb questions. This allowed me to combine and prioritize the ideas of all of these stakeholders and do some work that created a lot of value for the company and that made me useful to everybody I was in contact with.

Interior Design Intern

May - August 2021 • Wichita, KS

What I liked

Being able to design for luxury aviation (private jets) rather than what I am used to learning in school which is designing for commercial and residential spaces. I was able to learn how to fly a small plane, meet with high-end clientele purchasing these aircrafts, and designing my own custom Longitude to my specifications.

What I wish was different

Using more interior design related software such as SketchUp, AutoCAD, Lumion, Revit, etc..

Advice

Take in as much as you can and be open to exploring new avenues.

IT Developer Intern

June - August 2020 • Wichita, KS

What I liked

I liked that the company did its best to keep the internship going despite issues with covid. Everyone I met seemed to really enjoy working there and they were all good people.

What I wish was different

I wish the internship would have lasted longer so I could interact with the team more. Covid cut the internship length in half and I was only able to talk to a portion of my team in person because most were working remotely.

Advice

Try to network and make friends with everyone.

Supply Chain Intern

May - August 2019 • Wichita, KS

What I liked

The company told me from day one that it was my internship and to take ownership of the entire experience. I had the chance to work on meaningful projects that would truly haveb.can impact on the company. All of my peers were helpful to me as an intern. There were many opportunities to tour different facilities, shadow other roles and attend company networking events. At the end of the summer, all interns present their projects to the management team.

What I wish was different

I wish there were co-op positions available. Most of the roles are summer internships.

Advice

Take the chance to network within the company and shadow other roles. Be ready to work. Textron will challenge you. Even if you fail, learn from it. They want to see how you handle pressure and ambiguity.
