UC Berkeley Department of Recreation & Wellbeing

Manager Assistant

June 2014 • Berkeley, CA

What I liked

My job provides an incredible space that highly motivates individuals to learn, connect, explore and share knowledge to our community and non-community members whether it be through personal training, group exercise classes, and even instructional courses. Although I am a full-time student, I am on a fitness team that caters to students to seek mind-body wellness and health. This space has helped me grow both as an individual and as a young, aspiring professional.

What I wish was different

From the student perspective, I feel that each cohort of students being hired will experience somewhat similar routines and yet have very different feelings of experience. One thing I would not want to change the structure that every student is given an opportunity to be a leader from the get-go; working large events, being acknowledged in large staff meetings, and also being involved in the hiring process in the future. This gives many students the opportunity to boost their confidence by adding value to their tasks and responsibilities.

Advice

I would encourage any part-time, full-time or recent grad employee to enter the field knowing they are part of creating a culture that is unique from any other UC campus. Do not be afraid to help members and non-members who look afraid to take advantage of what we offer. There is no script giving for you to be able to be well-suited for this job. Every day is a new challenge and know that our team is are always willing to train you meet the needs of every member passing through the front door.
