Researching Artist

May - September 2019 • Boulder, CO

What I liked

I was researching mental health in women ages 17-29, trying to learn how living with mental illness effected their body image. I used the research results to make an art exhibit at the end of the summer. I liked learning about the incredibly wide variety of experiances they had with mental illness. It really hit me that no two people dealing with the same mental illness will have even close to the same experiance. Mental illness is highly personal, and exists on a spectrum. I liked hearing many of the women say that disclosing their memories and struggles to me in this process helped them feel like their pain was being turned into something beautiful.

What I wish was different

I wish I had more time to work on this research grant. I learned so much from everyone I talked

Advice

The best piece of advice I can offer after this experiance is apply for opportunities on campus even when they seem like a longshot! I applied for this research grant for fun, and was so pleasantly surprised when I realized I had actually been sponsored! You are just as capable as anyone, don't put something you want to do on hold.
