Virginia IT Agency (VITA)

Innovation Program Intern

May - August 2018 • Chester, VA

What I liked

As a part of the new innovation program, I got lots of exposure to new technology. One of the best perks to my positions was attending meetings with companies who had new technology to share. I was able to network on a personal level since the meetings were just between a few people, and I got to see devices and technology that hasn't even been implemented yet. Everybody I met and everybody I worked with were so nice and personable, it was a great environment to work in.

What I wish was different

I wish we had done "fun" things with other interns, like team-building activities or doing something non-work related.

Advice

Definitely know how to dress in a professional work environment. Everybody wears business casual at the least, and that's what is expected of the interns as well. Take lots of notes, it shows that you're paying attention and you never know when someone will ask you something later; it's good to have notes as reference.

Service Management and Delivery Intern

May - August 2018 • Chester, VA

What I liked

I loved the amount of responsibility that I was given within my team -- everyone treated me as though I was a colleague and not just as an intern. I felt as though I was able to make valuable contributions to my team and the agency as a whole.

What I wish was different

I wish that the interns had more interaction with each other. I would have loved to have gotten to know the other 9 interns better than just the occasional meetings we shared. Having set time, activities, or lunches together would have been nice.

Advice

Go into it expecting to learn a lot, and embrace that learning. It was a fast paced environment in which I was constantly on my toes and challenged, and if you do not keep an open mind and accept the challenge, it will overwhelm you.
