Civil Engineering Intern

May 2018 • Baton Rouge, LA

What I liked

Starting my internship with Volkert was pretty nerve racking. You learn all these things in school and then you're kind of just pushed into the world. It helped that my coworkers were open and eager to answer questions without fully answering the question. I feel as if this was a great technique for my own personal growth as an engineer. I also enjoyed gaining the experience of how to apply what we've learned through school on a more detailed level. Lastly, I've learned in engineering and problem solving in general is about asking the rights questions in a certain situation. I believe my internship has helped me gain an advantage against my peers by knowing what sort of questions need to be asked in a particular situation.

What I wish was different

The only aspect of my internship I wish were different is that they company would've had a surveying team on staff. It's more of a internal problem because I could've interned at a different firm. But I am pursuing my minor in surveying and hope one day I will receive that certification as well as my PE.

Advice

ASK QUESTIONS!!! Do not be afraid to ask questions. You may think the question is simplistic or mundane, but employers are looking for a candidate with drive and passion. It shows them, "hey, this person really wants to learn, has drive, and isn't afraid to make mistakes and learn from them."
