Continuous Improvement Intern

May - August 2022 • Fountain Inn, SC

What I liked

The people were great! My coworkers were welcoming and knowledgeable; it was very easy to jump into the environment. There was also something new to learn every day either on the plant floor or directly from a coworker.

What I wish was different

I wish I had more time to finish my projects.

Advice

Making sure to leave your mark, i.e. like a piece of software that can be automated or even a very thorough Word document on instructions of what was done during the experience. Also don't underestimate the time you have left to finish projects, even if it's a whole month before the end of the experience.

Advanced Manufacturing Engineering Intern

What I liked

I liked that I was able to work on an independent project, while also being able to get hands-on experience whenever I wanted. I learned a lot while building parts and speaking with members of the department.

What I wish was different

I was never assigned a mentor, so I struggled without guidance often.

Advice

Networking is not as scary as it sounds. Meet as many people as possible and use them as resources when you have questions throughout your internship.

Technical Intern

June - August 2020 • Holland, MI

What I liked

There were many technology and education resources available to me. A lot of different job functions are under one roof and I had the opportunity to interact with engineers and technicians outside my own group.

What I wish was different

I wish that there was more interactions between interns during the summer.

Advice

Speak up if there is a certain part of the company you want to experience. New learning opportunities are there, but you have to make them for yourself by being curious.

Product Engineering Intern

May - August 2018 • Holland, MI

What I liked

I liked the culture of the company. No question was stupid, and there is an incredible support base for interns. Everyone is willing to help you learn if you want to. I enjoy that in addition to our one main project, we were allowed to manage our time and take on other assignments. The projects are real-time, real issues that need to be solved and contribute to the success of the company, not a bunch of paperwork. They also gave us an opportunity as interns to present our work to the company and the leaders in the business. I also was a huge fan of the stipend they supply for housing. Overall, YFAI provides an incredible intern experience!

What I wish was different

Not much, really. There were a few IT issues during the summer, but nothing that really impacts my review of the internship at YFAI

Advice

Ask questions! and if you are bored, ASK FOR MORE TO DO!!! They will happily provide you with other things to do or learn. The internship is what you make of it.

What I liked

I liked the hands on atmosphere. In order to learn, they gave me projects to work on. I also liked the fact that I had a mentor who was always willing to help me and took the time to get to know me.

What I wish was different

I wish I was able to shadow other departments and work with other interns more.

Advice

Don't always expect to be super busy but be ready and eager to learn. There will be low points and high points of the experience but always know that is part of the learning experience. Write down every day something you have learned.
