I enjoyed the opportunity to learn about a wide scope of jobs within the bank. Zions felt it was important to learn about many of the different divisions.

What I wish was different

I felt that I was underutilized. I wish my schedule had more structure and that I had important projects to work on.

Advice

Build strong relationships both within and outside of your division. Trust will lead to opportunities to make an impact.

What I wish was different

I wish that I had lived closer, and that the location was in a different part of time.

Advice

It was in west valley which does not have a lot of things positive about it. But don't let that deter you as the people make up for the lack of excitement in the location.

I liked that I got my own cubicle and that I worked on a real project. I liked being able to further my coding skills

What I wish was different

I wish I had been given more 1x1 time with my mentor and project manager to learn more from them. It was hard though because they were very busy since many people on the team quit during the summer.

Credit Risk Project Manager

What I liked

Zions is great local company that is very established in Utah. They offer the experiences of larger banks but in a more intimate co-worker setting. For instance, I was able to talk and work with all the Senior Credit Administrators from credit analytics to consumer lending - something that would not be possible at larger banking institutions. Also, I directly reported to the Chief Credit Officer (CCO) for Zions. I was able to sit on meetings for approvals on large deals up to $100 Million+ loans and read the credit presentations for these deals.

What I wish was different

Credit is a difficult job setting to jump directly into from college. There are some analysis position, but they generally require programming skills. Instead, most of the credit careers requires years of underwriting and lending experience. Because of this it was difficult at times to see how my internship may lead into a full time position with Zions. Also, Zions is a smaller bank so their hiring process generally involves hiring for specific job positions where larger banks generally have robust rotational programs for people straight out of college.

Advice

Get to know as many individuals in the company you're working for as possible. Due to the nature of my internship I was able to interact daily with executive and C-suite employees. Part of this was because of what I was expected to do, but a big part of my interactions were because I sought them out. Learn about your co-workers and their positions, and which ones you'd like to work with or at least meet with. Many of them are great people with great insight into your potential career path.

What I liked

I was a retail supporter teller, meaning that I got to travel to different branches within the Salt Lake Valley everyday to fill in at branches that didn’t have enough employees. I loved meeting new people everyday as well as learning from working with different supervisors.

What I wish was different

While I loved meeting new people everyday, it was tough having to adjust to things being done differently at each branch.

Advice

This is a great job to have while attending school. They allowed me to work full time during the summer and part time during the school year and even offer a tuition reimbursement.
