Chemical Process Engineer Co-op

August - December 2019 • Hopewell, VA

What I liked

I enjoyed the independence the department gave me in how I wanted to tackle my projects. Everyone working in my area was also readily available and eager to help me.

What I wish was different

I wish there were more situations where I would be able to meet everyone in my department, like some social event hosted by management. I would have to meet with different people throughout my term to discuss aspects of my projects, and it would be somewhat awkward to introduce myself to someone I walked by everyday but had never spoken to. I also wish someone would have briefed me on the culture of the plant and not just the rules. I was always worried about doing something that would annoy or inconvenience others, especially the operators.

Advice

Don't be afraid to ask for more work. I would either feel uncomfortable asking for work or feel like I would start drowning if I got any more. The reality was my supervisors would have work readily available to be assigned, and when I did have a lot of work to do, it would only take me a day or two to complete and I would be bored until the next meeting with my supervisor to give me more assignments.

HSE Intern

May - August 2019 • Chesterfield County, VA

What I liked

You work with experienced professionals that know what they are doing in all aspects of the safety and health field. In this internship, you get experience in all types of safety. The Chesterfield, VA location is a chemical manufacturing company and during the 2019 summer, there were contractors on site renovating a building. As an intern with AdvanSix, you will get experience in the general industry field, process safety management and experience in the construction industry. The Chesterfield, VA site is a leader in producing nylon 6 resin and some examples of what nylon 6 resin is used for is carpet fibers, food packaging and for parts that go on vehicles.

What I wish was different

There is nothing that I would change from my internship experience with AdvanSix.

Advice

To step out of the comfort zone and leave the state of Kentucky for an internship. Being 8 hours away from Richmond, KY and all of your friends may be difficult at first, but it is going to make you much more of an independent person and learn about life quickly. The Richmond, VA area is an area with plenty to do as Washington, D.C. is just a couple hours away, Virginia Beach is only an hour and a half away, and downtown Richmond, VA is only approximately 30 minutes away from both AdvanSix plants located in Virginia.

What I wish was different

Advice

Go in being treated like a full time employee rather than just an average intern. You will have so much responsibility with this internship but hands down a great company to work for. Amazing experience!

HSE Intern

May - August 2018 • Chester, VA

What I liked

I really liked how they treat you like a full time employee rather than just an intern. That being said, this job comes with a lot of responsibility and huge projects, but the experience and knowledge gained during this internship will go a long way and give you tools in order to advance your career as an aspiring safety professional.

What I wish was different

Nothing.

Advice

To take on as many projects as you can, always take initiative and be a leader, don’t be scared to voice your opinion about any safety issues, and always communicate with fellow employees about any safety issues and concerns.

What I liked

Being in a professional and industrial setting in a company with people that have the degree I’m persuing.

What I wish was different

Taken more initiative on slow days.

Advice
