AFRL Scholars Program

Intern

May - August 2017 • Eglin Air Force Base, FL

What I liked

The access to a wide array of resources that would otherwise be difficult to obtain outside of the program. And, the relaxed work environment with many opportunities to explore .

What I wish was different

Being on an active military base, research can be difficult and slow due to the internet restrictions. The application process is also a bit tedious.

Advice

Working on a military base can be tough and it isn’t for everyone. Getting the application completed early will allow you time to correct any errors that will inevitably pop up. Also you must be prepared to wait. The government works slowly so it will be several months before an answer is received regarding your application.

AFRL Scholar

May - July 2018 • Eglin Air Force Base, FL

What I liked

I really enjoyed the varying research projects that I was exposed to within the mechanical engineering field while I worked there. It really opened my eyes to how much you can do with this degree.

What I wish was different

I wish I could've stayed longer, maybe as a co-op. My work was so close to being done, but unfortunately I didn't finish before I had to leave.

Advice

Ask your mentor as many questions as possible, even if they don't relate to your work. You're there to learn not only about your research, but about anything and everything else you can.
