Researcher

October 2019 - May 2020 • San Francisco, CA

What I liked

Hospitality at the workplace was welcoming and you get taken care of. The design of the workplace sparked wonder about new destinations and the desire to travel out of your comfort zone in efforts to experience more in life and connect with those you wouldn’t think you’d typically connect with.

What I wish was different

More recognition of my team’s hard work from entire department and more engaging team interaction.

Advice

Don’t focus on what you aren’t getting recognized for. Despite that, as hard as it may be to keep on going, remain determined to finish what you started and remind yourself that this experience is for you and will launch you further along your path. Keep your heart in it and mind focused on the bigger impact this opportunity is giving you.

User Experience Designer Intern

June - September 2019 • San Francisco, CA

What I liked

Supportive people, the internship is structured to help you grow your skills, all the while contributing to the company through meaningful projects. Excellent in developing professional skills, and improving my ability to think critically as a designer within an industry context.

What I wish was different

I wish I had a little more support in regards to some cross-functional responsibilities. My engineering team was super talented but in some ways I felt a bit lost how to best meet their needs, which is difficult given how different the teams are at Airbnb, so there’s no cookie cutter solution for how to beat prepare design interns for eng collaboration. I also wish I could have been in the Seattle office because San Francisco is a bit expensive, even with the housing stipend I barely had enough to pay for housing!

Advice

Push yourself out of your comfort zone!

Program Intern Lead

July - August 2019 • San Francisco, CA

What I liked

Working as a program intern lead shed light on teaching the youth in a very hospitable and supportive work environment. You're in charge of the programming for the youth in the aspect of their career development. It made us look forward coming to work everyday because the employees were lively and the youth were eager to learn more. You are paired with a mentor and given many technical and sociable tasks that are great additions to your resumé.

What I wish was different

With such a wonderful internship experience, I wish that it would have been longer than the 4 weeks. The program was only design for a month, but there was so much to learn and many connections to build with in a short amount of time. Nonetheless, it was a great experience!

Advice

Have fun in your way of teaching! This position lets you take on a creative scope on educating the youth, so take advantage of it to encapsulate them. Being the forefront of youth career development is extremely rewarding, especially watching them grow into smart, talented individuals. Take every career lesson with a grain of salt.

This was a very structured and robust program that was highly competitive and taken very seriously. I got to work on a real product team and do real work, with genuine mentorship.

What I wish was different

Program Intern Lead

July - August 2019 • San Francisco, CA

What I liked

I absolutely loved working with the high school youth interns that we met on a day-to-day basis. They are willing to learn and highly engaging in the topics, discussions, workshops, and corporate activities working while at Airbnb. On top of that, the employees we worked with, Sarah Simon & Jamar Moore, are extremely helpful in terms of mentorship and guidance for paving the path for the program.

What I wish was different

I wouldn't change much of anything through the internship other than the length. An 4-week-long internship was rather quite short, nonetheless, still a great experience in that small period!

Advice

Be patient! Working with both youth and experienced professionals places you at an awkward middle ground amongst your colleagues, but developing the proper workflow, staying organized, and listening to both sides of the spectrum (high school youth and working professionals) can put you at an advantageous position to grow and learn so much more!
