Alaska Department of Transportation & Public Facilities

Civil Engineering Technician

May - August 2021 • Fairbanks, AK

What I liked

The experience, I learned how a DOT construction job is carried out and many of the procedures followed from start to finish in a contract. How every contractor fits into the final product.

What I wish was different

I wish the hours hadn’t been as long.

Advice

One piece of advise would be to learn more than you need to about the process. If you would ever like to pursue a career in the civil field it would be advantageous to understand how projects are operated.

College Intern III

October 2018 • Anchorage, AK

What I liked

It’s great for civil engineers in the anchorage area. Anyone can apply.

What I wish was different

I wish the intern program was more structured when I started. It’s great now, but it took some time to develop.

Advice

Make sure you reach out and try new things. It’s easy to get sucked into one section.

equipment operator sub journey II

May - August 2019 • Glennallen, AK

What I liked

Loved the long hours and opportunity for overtime. Also working outdoors is great.

What I wish was different

It is a very physically intensive labor oriented environment and sometimes that can wear On a person. I also wish that we were able to get more hours of overtime.

Advice

It is not for everybody. In fact you have to be a resident of Alaska to even apply. It’s not for the faint of heart.

Intern

July - September 2018 • Anchorage, AK

What I liked

Good people, Not a super fast paced work environment but still challenging.

What I wish was different

Wish I could have spent more time in the field than in the office doing paper work in a cubicle.

Advice

Don't be afraid to ask supervisors about being moved to a different department or asking for different work. Your goal at the internship should hopefully be to gain new experiences so don't be afraid to make that happen.

Engineering intern

June - September 2018 • Anchorage, AK

What I liked

I was out side half the time doing drive way inspections. That was cool

What I wish was different

I wish I did more hands on engineering. I worked under two engineers which was good. But maybe learning Civil3D would have been good to learn.

Advice

If you want to know what it is like to work for the government. This is a great what to get an incite on what they do.
