Commercial Banking Intern

January 2018 - May 2019 • Washington, DC

What I liked

At Amalgamated, I have had autonomy over my work, allowing me to refine my project management skills, as well as the ability to collaborate with senior staff on underwriting and approval of commercial loans varying from $50,000 - $10 million. I have been exposed to a variety of types of clients, ranging from political, to not-for-profit, and small business, and I have gained technical skills that will help me as I enter my career in Public Accounting. You also gain a deep understanding of the commercial lending and underwriting process.

What I wish was different

They are working on putting together more formal intern training, and I wish could have received that!

Advice

This experience is amazing for accounting students, as you will be working with Financial Statements of various types of companies every day, you will need to use the financial accounting that you used in class as you create spreadsheets with client information. I was hesitant about working for a bank at first, but I couldn't have found a more lucrative experience for professional growth.

New Development Intern

June - August 2018 • Washington, DC

What I liked

The position and the office gives interns a lot of latitude and encourages self-intiative. So I made and worked on projects of personal value under the discretion of my supervisor.

What I wish was different

On the other hand, I wish that there would have been an organized structure and predetermined process flow of the business area I worked in. It would have made the process of finding my niche faster.

What I liked

I loved how my supervisor was very informative and helpful even through he had a busy schedule! I always had something to do and I got to engage with the whole marketing team on various different projects!

What I wish was different

I wish the internship was longer than 6 weeks. It would have allowed me to experience more.

Advice

Just be ready to learn and open-minded! You’ll learn a lot more by engaging with as many people as possible.
