The Applied Physics Laboratory is a research and development organization at the University of Washington. Established in 1943 at the request of the United States Navy, the Applied Physics Laboratory of the University of Washington (APL-UW) has provided continuous access to the highest levels of academic expertise in scientific research and engineering to address research and development problems for the United States Navy as well as other publicly- and privately-funded sponsor organizations, such as the National Science Foundation. Laboratory expertise spans acoustic and remote sensing, ocean physics and engineering, medical and industrial ultrasound, polar science and logistics, environmental and information systems, and electronic and photonic systems.
