The diversity of hands on experiences in the conservation field. We worked with many government agencies and could shadow other positions, ask questions, and determine what jobs and skills may be desirable. There was also a lot of travel involved with different work sites, one time even to Florida for disaster relief. If you are put with a good crew and lead by example with integrity, you will be surprised at what can be accomplished and the bond that can be had on the crew.
What I wish was different
Less last-minute changes in plans or being uninformed about possible changes in the works, but it taught me to be flexible and ask a lot of questions.
Advice
The job is very difficult physically, mentally and emotionally. Not for everybody, don't have romantic ideals of what to expect, be willing to admit and apologize when you are wrong, stand up for hard decisions, and learn in the process.

What I liked
I really loved being outdoors, in forests, traveling all over the state, camping out, commoraderie, and of course cuttin down trees with a 42" chainsaw!
What I wish was different
I wish it would have been with a actual fire crew, but the AZCC did get me certified and up to speed on everything required to obtain a job with one.
Advice
If you have the opportunity to do it, or have young folks in your life, I would highly recommend the AZCC!

What I liked
Being outdoors, learning about the native plants, doing meaningful work and my crew members were amazing to work with.
What I wish was different
Having a 10 hour work day was tough.
Advice
Buy good hiking shoes, they may be expensive but it is worth it.
