Out in the field inspecting civil engineering in action.
What I wish was different
Not always had tasks. Sometimes you would just be sitting around.
Advice
It’s an easy job and pays better than minimum wage. Just be ready to be out in the heat for long periods of time.

Stockroom Attendant
August 2019 • Russellville, AR
What I liked
The hours were quite ideal. Full time 4 10s during the summer, three day weekends, then whatever I could get when classes started. Basically a vacation whenever I wanted (unpaid of course).
What I wish was different
I prefer working on the road or outside, so being stuck in an office is a negative.
Advice
Always do your best.

Sign Crew Summer Hand
May 2018 • Harrison, AR
What I liked
I enjoyed working with equipment like the bucket truck and jackhammer. It was nice to have a job where I got to travel around and see the country. It kept me active and made me stronger.
What I wish was different
I would've liked to earn my CDL and been able to drive the trucks
Advice
Don't work on the sign crew if you can't lift the jackhammer. We had a guy who couldn't lift it and his usefulness was very limited, but I will say, by the end of the summer he had gotten a lot stronger and was able to do most tasks required.

Civil Engineering Intern
May - August 2019 • West Memphis, AR
What I liked
Freedom. They gave me job plans, a PickUp Truck, and a task once in a while. I would be out the office door within the first 15 minutes of the day headed to the job site.
I like how I felt important
What I wish was different
I wish I did a little more office work. Some times it was hard putting in 7am to 4 or 5 pm every day in the summer heat. Plus sometimes (most of the times lol) there was work on Saturdays from about 8am-3pm, but it was not a requirement..
Also, there was not really any engineering going on. I was just an inspector, and anyone smart person could do what I was doing. As an Engineer though, I kinda had to work up the ranks in that office.
Advice
No one really has time to teach you, so don't ask too many question. They will just be annoyed. Do your own research and ask very strategic questions.
Once they see you taking initiative to learn the stuff on your own, you can quickly earn the respect of everyone in the office. Then they will be like, 'yo, thats a smart dude.' They then will assign you other cooler tasks.
They will also be a lot more forgiving on you during the slow times if you just chill in the office since they know that when work does pick up, you are on top of it!
