Banfield Pet Hospital

Client Service Coordinator

January 2019 • Portland, OR

What I liked

The beauty of working for Banfield is that there are so many different locations. With this comes a refreshing variety of personalities of para staff and doctors. I grew to love my location's team like a family and we treat each other as such. Part of the reason I want to continue working for this company is this positive experience. This became evident during the beginning of COVID restrictions in Oregon. This was a tough time but our team came together to help one another distribute our hours and to cover the shifts of those who needed to be quarantined. That was just our hospital. The company overall offered financial assistance and time off with pay during those first few vulnerable weeks. I think that says a lot about how much the company cares for its people.

What I wish was different

There is a huge emphasis on training/education for Veterinary Assistants ( VA's) to be Certified Vet Technicians ( CVT's) and to become doctors. It does not seem to be the same with Client Service Coordinators. I would like to see business education options that are relevant to Veterinary Health Industry. I think this would encourage a hospital perspective in business decision making.

Advice

Always be willing to learn and ask questions. Our teams "huddle" regularly so there's always an opportunity to ask and be coached about client communication, note taking, code compliance, etc. Moreover, this job will teach you how to face stressful situations with poise and professionalism. ( ex. difficult clients, pet emergencies, or even pet deaths) If it gets to be too much, you can always reach out to leadership for resources especially if you have mental health concerns.
