Barrow Neurological Institute

Student Research Intern

May - August 2019 • Phoenix, AZ

What I liked

I liked the opportunities to network. I got to meet very high level professionals and get to know them. The research I got to do was not something that a lot of places will let undergraduates do, so I really got a head-start on my peers for lab experience.

What I wish was different

I wish the on-boarding process was simpler

Advice

You will get out of it what you put into it. Going to the sessions and meeting professionals while doing high-level research is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, so take advantage of it.

What I liked

I loved everything I got to learn. They try to give you every opportunity possible to pick up new skills and information.

What I wish was different

Not being paid wasn't great. I had to drive an hour each way for the internship and gas isn't cheap. So I paid for this experience.

Advice

Take advantage of every opportunity provided.

What I liked

In this research internship I was able to not only work on my own project under the supervision of my mentor, but everyone was very encouraging of me branching out and getting to learn about what other people in my lab as well as other labs were working on in order to allow me to find out what I wanted to study. I learned way more than just what it is like to work in a research lab thanks to all of the wonderful people I met.

What I wish was different

Advice

When getting into research, one piece of advice that I would give is make sure that you find the right fit in terms of the topic you would be studying, the people in the lab, as well as what you would be doing on a day-to-day basis. Try to avoid joining a lab just because you think it will look good on your resume or before you actually know it is the right one for you--it makes a world of difference!

What I liked

There are numerous advances made in the field of Neuroscience all the time at Barrow. It is alot of fun to learn about all these new advances, whether they be in surgery, medicine, behavior, etc.

What I wish was different

I do wish there had been more opportunities to learn about lab techniques as well as the different functional regions of the brain.

Advice

I think it is very important that someone who wants to do this is invested. Working in a lab consists of long hours and alot of grueling work at times. It is definitely not a job for people who lose focus or get bored easily.
