Bartram's Garden

Apprentice

May 2023 • Philadelphia, PA

What I liked

I really appreciate the vast diverse faculty that thrives on Bartram's. The staff do a beautiful job on ensuring that the community is served with the resources. The 50 acres is well managed and I appreciate that the people can bike, walk, boat, etc. on the land. What I loved the most is Sankofa Community Farm. The land for growing food in order to fight that area being a food dessert and fighting food insecurity through its culturally suited crops.

What I wish was different

More acknowledgment about safety concerns from the people of the community.

Advice

To really listen to the needs of the others, connect with the community and be willing to step aside and advocate through work for those who are living in disparities.

Farm Fellow

June - August 2019 • Philadelphia, PA

What I liked

I have a great appreciation for the hands-on work I was able to jump into. Farming in an inner-city setting is an experience like no other. Equally one of my favorite aspects was the great level of direct engagement I had with Philadelphia’s southwest community.

What I wish was different

I wish there was more of an official platform to make farm-wide polices transparent to everyone.

Advice

An open-mind and the ability to adapt to different flows are the skills that you will utilize the most. So don’t be overwhelmed by the training, protocols, and orientations. It’s a learning process, that literally depends on growth.
