Baton Rouge General Medical Center

In patient pharmacy volunteer

January - May 2022 • Baton Rouge, LA

What I liked

I got to experience being in a hospital setting and working with medical professionals.

What I wish was different

I wish that I could have continued volunteering there but my school schedule doesn’t allow it.

Advice

I would tell others to talk to the pharmacists as soon as you begin volunteering and get to know everyone right away.

Nonemergency Medical Transporter

What I liked

I've been working this job for two and a half years now and what I found was most valuable to me was the diverse clinical experiences. As a Patient Transporter, you transport patients all over the hospital through different departments and get to interact with different specialties

Advice

Be open minded. Every patient is going to be different. Some are more understanding, and some are not so understanding (intentionally or not). Just handle it professionally, and always ask for help from someone else if you need it. With my two and a half years of working there, you learn that the patients would like a honest open communication for their recovery (as would I if I were a patient). For transporters, that includes introducing yourself, addressing them by their name, telling them where you're about to transport them to, how long it should take, and if they have any questions. If the patient has any inquires about anything, always answer it to the best of your ability and if you don't know, always ask someone else who knows more about the patient (Their nurse for example).
