Billerud Americas Corporation

Process Control/Electrical Engineering Co-Op

January - August 2023 • Quinnesec, MI

What I liked

I liked the variety of projects I worked on. I liked how I was assigned a mentor who helped me stay on track and helped me when needed. He stood up for me. The team I was a part of respected me and I have a lot of respect for them still! I liked working on different projects throughout the area of the mill I was assigned.

What I wish was different

I wish there was more Process Control staff. When I joined the facility, there were three full-time engineers. One was still moderately fresh out of MTU. After leaving there was another taking over my responsibilities. I wish I got to learn PID loop tuning with lambda tuning. The only loop tuning I exercised was very nontraditional for a Waste Fuel Boiler.

Advice

Speak up for yourself. Do not act like you know everything because you don't. Most people at this facility are looking out for you. Learn to adapt to the industrial environment with care. Realize that this facility is MVPP as well. It is clean. Safety is important! Keep yourself safe before any task. Think before you do. If you are unsure about what you are doing stop and ask. The only stupid question is the one you do not ask.

Summer Human Resources/Process Controls Engineering Student

May - August 2022 • Quinnesec, MI

What I liked

I liked the real-world experience I received. The care during stressful parts of work, along with the flexibility was needed for me as a first-year coming in. I got to learn and apply skills I knew.

What I wish was different

I wish there were more students in Billerud interested in Process Controls. There are so many opportunities students may not know are there, but they are still there.

Advice

Make sure you speak up and clarify when you do not understand something. Be sure to jump in when you do, so you can show you can grow!
