Carrier Sales Intern

May - August 2018 • Chicago, IL

What I liked

I loved the culture and work environment; everyone was super nice and welcoming. I didn't know a single employee that wasn't willing to help with any question or problem, or one that wasn't willing to just talk and have fun sometimes. The supervisor/new hire trainer was extremely good at preparing everyone for the sales floor and make their new 2 week training program super enjoyable and helpful.

What I wish was different

Every intern was paired with an employee or the manager on their team that acted as a mentor throughout the internship. I was under my team's manager and I sometimes wished that I had a sales rep to work directly under instead. Managers have a lot of things to attend to and my manager in particular got up to walk to other cubicles a lot, so I often found myself asking other employees for help. Everyone was more than willing to help me out, but I just wish that I had a single person I went to for most of my problems so I could have gotten closer to a full-time employee.

Advice

If there's anything I took away from this experience, it's that being confident is so powerful. In a sales position, being confident and firm is so important in actually making a sale. But even aside from sales, being confident in any job and workplace will get you so far; it shows professionalism, intelligence (even if you haven't actually been in the industry for too long), and it helps make relationships with other people because they will be more inclined to work with you.
