What I liked

My manager and employer, Andres Abeyta, was greatly invested in my personal growth as a professional. As my first job, I received the best guidance possible in my transition from student to professional.

What I wish was different

I wish my manager would have been more direct with his instructions in communication. Sometimes critical details were lacking.

Advice

Do not be intimidated by the initial amount of information given to you. It is a lot to process, but you will be eased into the internship

What I liked

I liked the team I worked with for the duration of the internship. The mentor, Andres, was always very kind and open to answering questions. Working with the other interns was great because they gave helpful feedback on the graphic content I worked on. Additionally, I'm glad that I gained some useful digital marketing skills that I never knew about prior to this experience, like setting up email campaigns and conducting SEO optimizations.

Marketing Intern

November 2020 • San Diego, CA

What I liked

Andres Abeyta is a very caring, helpful, and approachable employer. He is willing to teach us a lot about our job and answer our questions. Through what I learned from him, I feel that in my future work experience, I will take a lot less detours than others. In the meetings, we were free to express our opinions. And he would let interns to lead meetings in order to train our leadership skill.

What I wish was different

Due to pandemic, my whole internship was online. I wish I could have done it face to face.

Advice

Don't be afraid to ask questions, because Andres will be very happy to help you.

Intern

January 2021 • San Diego, CA

What I liked

I really enjoyed getting to test and review GIS courses and meet with the instructors. Many of the courses were skills that we never were taught in my degree, which made them super interesting to take and I even learned new things with technology I was already familiar with. I enjoyed getting to work on my own, and being able to bring my work back and present it to the rest of the team after I finished for feedback and suggestions. It felt like my opinions and suggestions were respected and valued, which tends to be rare in internships.

What I wish was different

I miss getting to do internships in person, but having a remote internship like this made it super easy to keep up with my classes during the semester, and also be able to contribute a lot during my internship.

Advice

You get what you put into it! You can learn so much about the business side of GIS while also learning useful GIS skills for the industry.
