Social Work Intern
May - August 2019 • Boston, MA
What I liked
Hands on work, working directly with people, strong sense of community, high levels of responsibility right away, fast pace, the work felt important, constantly was learning, compassionate leadership in the company
What I wish was different
It was an extremely high stress job, this was mostly just because the work itself was extremely intense. I never knew each day what I was going to see and what kind of interactions I was going to have with patients, positive or negative. I specifically worked with patients with substance abuse disorder, and this led to a lot of heartbreak as I would become attached to patients who continued to use. It's not even necessarily that I wish this had been different, it's just not something I feel I could sustain long term.
Advice
Be ready for a fast, intense pace when going into a job like this. Also, consider self-care and processing the hard things you'll see and go through not as a good thing to do but as an ethical imperative so that you can continue to do your job and don't become angry or fearful.
