Boston Scientific

Process Development Intern

January - August 2022 • Arden Hills, MN

What I liked

A very supportive community of high-level engineers. The internship program was very well embraced by all co-workers. My manager and mentor both made sure I was exposed to as much of the industry as possible in my time with Boston Scientific. This was my first experience in the engineering workforce, and I would definitely recommend it as a place to work.

What I wish was different

Advice

Ask lots of questions. If you need help on a project most engineers are more than willing to take time out of their day to give some advice (feel it out, some projects are on a tighter schedule).

FP&A Intern

June - August 2022 • Marlborough, MA

What I liked

Very nice people. Relatively flat hierarchical structure for a large company. Finance organization is lean and you get a good amount of responsibility.

What I wish was different

Hybrid schedule is awesome, only problem is office is often a ghost town. Tuesday is the big in-person day.

Advice

You get out of it what you put into it. Ask a lot of questions.

Packaging Engineering Intern

January - August 2022 • Minnetonka, MN

What I liked

I loved Boston’s culture and work atmosphere. My team made team bonding a priority with team lunches and outings such as baseball games and happy hours. The projects were also very interesting. I was able to learn about the medical device as well as help create packaging for those devices. It was inspiring knowing we could help people’s lives without directly being in the field of medicine.

What I wish was different

I wish there were more intern activities throughout the fall and spring semesters, most activities happen in the summer. I also wish I was able to work in person more than I did!

Advice

Definitely network as much as possible, it will take you places! Show up to many events as possible, even if it doesn’t directly relate to your position, whether it’s on Microsoft Teams or in person. Also, don’t be afraid to ask questions and jump in on random projects. Medical device can be intimidating but everyone is willing to get you up to speed and teach as much as needed.

Equipment Engineering Intern - AI Team

May - August 2021 • Maple Grove, MN

What I liked

The environment, people, and culture at BSC are great! I got to talk to lots of people throughout the company and learn what goes on in the different departments and positions. For my specific projects, it was great to be given complete autonomy on my projects, with my mentors just a cubicle away to assist me with any problems. And I learned a ton about the medical device industry and life at a big company!

What I wish was different

Nothing that BSC could have really fixed, but due to COVID-19, we weren't able to have as many of the intern events throughout the summer. They did a good job of hosting virtual events in place of them, but nothing beats in-person events with the other interns.

Advice

Don't be afraid to ask questions! And don't be afraid to reach out to people across the company from you. Everyone at BSC is super kind and willing to take the time to talk to you and thoroughly answer your questions so make sure to ask them!

What I liked

Working in person and getting helpful feedback from higher ups. Also, exploring the city and networking with other interns.

What I wish was different

I wish I got more technical experience and more time to speak with my mentor about my internship goals. I also wish there were more in person events on the Arden Hills campus.

Advice

Speak up whenever you have questions or concerns about your position or BSC as a whole.

Advice

Design Assurance Intern

June - August 2021 • Maple Grove, MN

What I liked

The environment and management was overall great! Management was easy to talk to and was very open to hearing about your comments, concerns, and questions.

What I wish was different

I wish there was more diversity throughout the company. In my specific area of the company, I was the only African American person on my team, and I was only the intern.

Advice

Make sure to talk to as many people as possible while here as an intern or entry level worker to make those connections and get to know people. They look forward to speaking to you at Boston Scientific! This will allow for you to make even more connections outside of the company as well.

Process Development Engineering Intern

May - August 2021 • Minneapolis, MN

What I liked

I loved the BSC culture, and the fact that they had most engineering interns in person showed that they valued our experiences. They also helped us with relocation and provided us a relocation stipend.

What I wish was different

I wish they had hosted an intern specific event, but we made sure to get together and hang out on our own.

Advice

Their internships require you to learn and gain knowledge about your project very quickly so you can start. As a full time employee the work-life balance seems very good, but as an intern you will be working hard to finish your project.

Design Assurance Engineering Intern

May - August 2021 • Minneapolis, MN

What I liked

I loved the company culture! Everyone was so kind and helpful, always willing to give you advice and help you out. The projects were interesting, and it was so inspiring to be working on projects that you knew were going to help people. I loved the internship events that were offered, and the intern housing was awesome!

What I wish was different

I wish there would have been more opportunities to network with interns at other sites as well as in other departments, specifically interns that weren't engineers.

Advice

Network through 1:1 meetings with people from other departments to learn more about what you may want to go into, communication is key!

Medical Device Builder

May - August 2021 • Arden Hills, MN

What I liked

Friendly coworkers, paid overtime, helpful department.

What I wish was different

I made more money as a temp employee than some of the full time workers because Boston was slow to update their pay raise. I would be quite frustrated if I was on the other end of this experience.

Advice

Many helpful learning opportunities, take advantage of your resources and learn about as many processes as you can, don't settle in to the same few roles.

Design Assurance Intern

May - August 2021 • Maple Grove, MN

What I liked

Boston Scientific is a wonderful place to work, especially as your first internship! Everyone you meet is so nice, helpful, and encouraging to help you grow personally, professionally, and educationally. It is a huge company, so there are many opportunities to network and move around, trying different roles and departments to find your home. There are a variety of ways to get involved outside of your project, such as joining an Employee Resource Group or volunteering around the Twin Cities, but the projects are also incredible. It's so heartwarming to know that what you do will make a difference and change people's lives.

What I wish was different

I know that this is due to covid, but I wish there had been more ways for me to interact with interns at other sites and departments. Despite being a hybrid intern, I got to know quite a few engineers at the Maple Grove site, but I wish I had the chance to meet interns in California and Marlborough through online events. There were many online events, but they were more centered on listening to a speaker than interacting with one another.

Advice

Don't be afraid to ask questions and ask to get involved! If you want to be involved with more deliverables or have an opportunity with a new aspect of your project, ask your manager or supervisor about it. If you are overworked or underworked, let your team know. Frequently check in with your team to know what you're doing well on and what you can improve upon. You don't need to wait for feedback.

Finance Intern (Corporate Accounting)

May - August 2021 • Marlborough, MA

What I liked

The best part about being an intern at BSC has been the people. From intern, to associate, to management, everybody I spoke with over the course of the summer was interested in learning about me and invested in providing me the resources to be successful during and after my internship. The workload was manageable, and I never felt intimidated when asking questions about my work or the company. For finance interns, weekly meet ups were scheduled to meet with management across the company, ranging from divisional controllers to the CFO. While remote work and networking can be challenging, I genuinely felt that everybody I met at the company cared and were willing to put in the effort to make this an enjoyable experience for me and for the other interns.

What I wish was different

While there were opportunities to meet with employees from a range of positions and departments/divisions, I did not feel like I had too much opportunity to learn about the business itself and the roles available across different areas of finance. I think it'd be helpful to have more formal opportunities to learn about specific divisions/departments. Being remote definitely can be a bit isolating at times, but I'd expect in the future opportunities will have an in-person component as they did in the past.

Advice

Ask questions, be curious, and network with employees in different areas of the business. Whether you love the work you are doing or not, there is a lot to learn from any task/individual if you have the right mindset. Just be open minded to new challenges, work hard, and be flexible.

Global Supply Chain Finance

May - August 2021 • Marlborough, MA

What I liked

Overall I really enjoyed this internship experience! I liked how the finance interns had meet and greets with finance professionals within Boston Scientific to ask them questions and learn about their roles, and how I worked with a small team for Global Supply Chain Finance which really gave me the ability to get to know my boss and the rest of the team. I liked how the project I worked on throughout the summer was truly impactful to the Global Supply Chain and Operations teams and I was given the opportunity to present my project at the end of the summer. I was even fortunate to go to the Quincy Distribution Center for a tour and a day of in-person networking with my team which was very nice as the internship was conducted remotely. Everyone I have spoken with over the course of the summer truly embodies the values of BSC and the caring culture and people are more than happy to share their experiences and perspectives within the company regardless of their job title which is really telling about the company culture. I was also given the opportunity to network with analysts within the Financial Leadership Development Program to learn about the full-time rotational program roles which was really helpful.

What I wish was different

This internship was remote so I had some technical difficulties with my laptop's software and hardware and I ended up having to get another laptop sent midway through the summer. I think it would be helpful to fully test the equipment before sending it to the interns to ensure the least amount of setup difficulty, but other than that I was able to hit the ground running remotely and have a fruitful internship experience. I do wish there was a little more structure to get interns to do meetups with just each other to do more relationship building, but as this internship was remote, this challenge wouldn't be as much of a consideration for future summer interns in a hybrid/in-person model.

Advice

A piece of advice I would give future BSC interns is to be curious, open-minded, unafraid to ask questions, and to step out of their comfort zone and set up 15-20 minute chats with professionals who they are interested in learning about their background and their role. Especially for a remote internship, this helps so much in broadening your network and learning about the company as well as helping you stay connected.

R&D Intern

May - August 2021 • Marlborough, MA

What I liked

Friendly and supportive coworkers, good work culture, plenty of opportunities to relax or have fun as a break at work, not overly strict on anything, will assist you in getting on different projects that you like more

What I wish was different

I wish that I had communicated sooner that I would like to do different projects to gain more relevant experience, because I definitely could have been doing that sooner. It would have been nice to have more of the company and their products explained to me, and to have seen different engineers working in different departments

Advice

Network and reach out to as many people the second you start an internship. Everyone here wants to see you grow and succeed, it's only a matter of taking the first step and helping yourself. They do amazing work here and it's a gold mine for anyone wanting to gain knowledge/insight/experience in the biomedical field

Clinical Operations Intern

June - August 2021 • Minnetonka, MN

What I liked

I really enjoyed the environment at BSC. Everyone was super supportive and wanted to ensure that you got the most out of your intern experience.

What I wish was different

Due to COVID, there was limited in-person interaction (which was expected) but I wish the circumstance could have been different in that regard. Building a network and developing relationships is easier to do when you are face-to-face.

Advice

I would say to just fully embrace the unknown. Don't be afraid to speak up and ask question. Build a network outside of just your department. Remember that at the end of the day this experience is meant to challenge you but also help to determine what it is you want to do in the future (and it is okay to realize that you might want to switch directions)!

Global Recruitment Marketing Intern

June - August 2021 • Marlborough, MA

What I liked

The people are phenomenal! Everyone was so welcoming and excited to connect, and I was impressed by the commitment to diversity equity and inclusion. My manager worked so hard to make the experience unforgettable (and it was!) I had the flexibility to create a customized summer project that leveraged my skillset and targeted some skills I wanted to improve on. I really felt like part of the team this summer.

What I wish was different

I wish there had been more structure and opportunities to meet people. Because of the remote setup, it was very independent at times. While everyone was friendly and willing to set time aside to chat, it was hard to connect with other interns and make friends through the program.

Advice

Become involved outside your role/team! Join Employee Resource Groups, attend intern information sessions, and set aside time to meet people while you're still an intern. If there are any other areas you're interested in, find out who to talk to and make those connections.

Marketing Intern

June - September 2018 • Valencia, CA

What I liked

The culture at Boston Scientific was incredible. I worked with wonderful people in the Neuromodulation division. Additionally, I had an immense amount of autonomy in my project while still being able to ask for feedback as needed.

What I wish was different

I would have liked a group intern project throughout the summer as well. We did a few fun activities, but I think this would be a great way to source ideas from many different functions.

Advice

Meet with as many people as you can in all departments/functions, and present your work to as many people as you can at the end (that it would be useful for them to hear).
