Crime Prevention Specialist

May 2020 • Laie, HI

What I liked

I loved being able to work alongside the Supervisors, Office Managers and the Director himself daily! Not only was I able to expand my knowledge in the field but was able to refine professionalism in the workplace by working with these leaders in the department.

What I wish was different

I wish I had been working here pre COVID so that I would have had more field experience rather than just the office experience. A large section of the students have left because of COVID-19 so fieldwork was slow but as I said earlier, had a lot of great experiences with office work.

Advice

Learn from your leaders as much as you can. There were 9 Supervisors, 1 Office Manager, 1 General Manager, and the Director himself. It was interesting to see how each person worked and you learned from each leader's strengths AND weaknesses. Take every opportunity to learn and do not be afraid to speak your mind and share your ideas. Be respectful but also be bold or you leave with your good ideas and they will stay as ideas.

University Teaching Assistant

July 2020 • Laie, HI

What I liked

I love this job because it enhances my skill to learn more about the school and its entrepreneurship center. All the full-time faculty I am working with are accommodating and help me make my documents and analysis robust. Another benefit that I am receiving for this job is that I conduct meetings and create agendas bi-monthly with the Entrepreneurship department. As of the moment, I am conducting a benchmarking of the Willes Center for International Entrepreneurship from other universities across the U.S. Within my 3 months working on this position, I have gained self-confidence, hone my communication skills, build a wider network of international and professional people, and boost my leadership and team ability.

What I wish was different

I wish I could receive more information from the Willes Center ready to revamp and add on to the existing research. Despite this scenario, I was able to reach numerous staff that is in charge of a project. I receive no training because the position given to me was new. Still, I contacted the administrative assistant to know more about the responsibilities that I need to take into account.

Advice

Learn to network with the administrative assistant and faculty to better assist them as a teaching assistant. Provide reports every week and be open for feedback and suggestions from the professionals to enhance your role's competence.

Academic Advisor

August 2019 • Laie, HI

What I liked

This was an incredible learning opportunity for me. I was able to work closely with all of the Academic Advisors and gain a stronger understanding of their work and involvement in the university.

What I wish was different

I was the first Intern this department has every had so the training and my overall position was a little disorganized. This is of course to be expected with a new position and was a learning experience for all so I hope that in the future it could be a little more clear on training.

Advice

This position in a university is a coordinator for the rest of the university. It is very helpful in this job if you have a high understanding of all the other resources and departments that are offered to the students.

Online EIL Tutor

May 2019 • Laie, HI

What I liked

I worked flexible hours and over the summer worked independently on some projects that greatly enhanced my professional development. These projects included designing new course activities based on a Master Thesis done by a college of our supervisor, reviewing and revising course curriculum, and evaluating applications for placement into leveled English courses.

What I wish was different

The hardest part of the projects this summer is I mostly spent time on computers working alone. I would have loved to work more closely with other coworkers or students and engaged in more interaction or teaching experience.

Advice

If working alone on computers is difficult for you to do for long hours, find your own personal ways to stay focused and motivated and keep things going for yourself.
