BuildingLogiX

Energy Engineering Co-op

January - August 2024 • Dayton, OH

What I liked

At BuildingLogiX, I worked on a variety of projects involving building optimization. I provided assistance on connecting building HVAC devices to the BuildingLogiX software, performing energy calculations and creating trends from the points connected, and communicating possible energy savings for the customer. I enjoyed working and learning about the energy engineering field. All of the projects I worked on were important to the company, and I was seen as a valuable member of the team. Everyone at BuildingLogiX was willing to answer any questions and help work through a problem with me. I never felt out of place in the office, and I was proud of the work I accomplished.

What I wish was different

I wish that in the beginning I had a better understanding of the whole project process. During my training, there was documentation on the process, but I did not fully understand it at that point due to needing to learn about the industry and not understanding all the terminology. For many of my first projects, I began working on them at varying stages without fully knowing what was completed before or what comes next. I eventually learned through experience, but I think it would have been beneficial for me to have more of a tutorial with an example on the whole project process after I had a better understanding of the industry and terminology of the business.

Advice

Don't be afraid to just jump into a project, even if you feel like you may be making some mistakes. A good way to learn is to try something new and try to work through the problem first before asking for help. Everyone is very friendly and happy to answer any questions you may have, but it is also beneficial to try first. Then, you can ask questions about the work you did, so you know better for next time. I think being confident in your thought processes, working through a problem, and then not being afraid to ask for help when needed is a good way to succeed.
