Buying Intern

June - August 2021 • Burlington, NJ

What I liked

From the start of the internship, I was a full-time team member. I was able to email vendors, attend buying meetings, and help plan for upcoming months.

What I wish was different

I would not change anything about the internship. It was extremely hands-on and I was able to be truly exposed to the life of a buyer.

Advice

Come ready to work! This internship was fast-paced and gave students a real opportunity to see what it is like working at the company.

What I liked

Flexible hours for students, respectful colleagues, safe environment

What I wish was different

Managers attitudes and views, better scheduling for customers and employees (unnecessarily long lines due to being understaffed)

Advice

Your mental health comes first so if completing a job becomes too much, talk to your manager and step away from it.

Cashier

May - August 2020 • Frisco, TX

What I liked

I liked that it was close to home for me, and the people I worked with were nice and willing to help me out.

What I wish was different

I wish I had gotten to learn more about certain things in the retail world, like merchandising, ticketing, etc.

Advice

Retail is just as bad as everyone says it is in the beginning, but don't quit because you get a bad start. Keep going and you just might learn something and enjoy yourself.

Santitazation

July - September 2020 • Valley Stream, NY

What I liked

I enjoyed serving customers as they entered the store with a clean environment. The interaction with people was quite interesting and educating as I learn how to meet someone's wishes.

What I wish was different

I wish I had more protective gear as I interact with a high volume of people. A mask and latex gloves were not enough protection for me.

Advice

When you show people you care, most of them reciprocate with appreciation but you have to give yourself a certain amount of allowance for those who don't.

Cashier

June - August 2020 • New York City, NY

What I liked

I met different people and was able to touch up on my Spanish-speaking skills.

What I wish was different

Retail stores don't run well without exploitation. The (3) managers on 14th Street never really cared about my personal schedule, which meant they never tried to work with me and/or made it a hassle to adjust my schedule. They spoke to me like I was incompetent at times and violated (they still are) a bunch of COVID-19 health regulations which also motivated me to leave ASAP.

Advice

Only do this temporarily please, would definitely not work there again unless it was to make emergency cash.

Sales Associate

June 2020 • Garden City, NY

What I liked

Management is very nice, and treats everyone like family. Very flexible with scheduling.

What I wish was different

Maybe the pay a little higher since you do, do a lot for not that much pay but it’s still minimum wage. But no complaints.

Advice

You always have to work hard, we have a really good team, and we don’t even want to fall behind. Be prepared to work but it’s going to be with wonderful people!

Buying Intern

June - August 2019 • Burlington, NJ

What I liked

I loved the atmosphere at Burlington. Everyone was so welcoming and wanted to help you learn about the business and your role. I was in some meetings with the DMM of my department, was able to see the shadow other areas of the business to understand how it all comes together, also had the opportunity to work closely with other interns on my group project throughout the summer. I made great connections and cannot wait to return!

What I wish was different

I wish there was more time in the summer, because I felt like there were other areas of the business I wanted to shadow in order to learn more about, but ran out fo time.

Advice

Be a sponge and absorb as much information as you can. This is an incredible opportunity and you will learn so much. Also, don't be afraid to ask questions about anything! Everyone wants to see you succeed.

assistant buyer

June - August 2019 • Burlington, NJ

What I liked

I really enjoyed the fact that I could go to market twice a week and obtain hands on experience to learn more about this industry rather than just partaking in busy work for the entire summer.

What I wish was different

I wished that there had been more assistance in finding housing as it took a while to find something suitable and also I wish there was more opportunities/ communication when planning the bonding activities with the other interns. Due to commuting difficulties and the amount of tolls that had to be paid to get certain places.

Advice

I would say ask all the questions you possibly can and partake in all opportunities for shadowing as it will be on of the few times to learn about industries that you may not have heard of in school or if you have learn about what goes on on a daily basis rather than just textbook knowledge.
